Sudden Drastic Change In Calories Burned During Activity

I recently changed the battery in my heart rate monitor.  Estimated calories burned during activities are considerably different since I changed the battery, though my heart rate is consistent with prior workouts.  What is going on?  For example, on 3/7/2021 I ran 13 miles at 143 bpm for 1439 calories burned.  On 3/21 I ran 13 miles at 146 bpm, 6 seconds per mile slower (headwinds) for 1074 calories (365 difference).  This is just one example.  There are more.  What gives?

  • A guess here; if the battery was low before, the data may have been more noisy/spiky, and that affects the recorded heart rate variability, which in turn impacts calculation (by FirstBeat algorithms) of several things (training effect, and perhaps also calorie estimation). Connect does not show HRV. GoldenCheetah does, there may be others that show it.
