Forerunner 935 or 945 ? Or 735xt ?

Hi everyone !

I have recently taken up ski touring and would like to buy a Garmin tracking watch.

I wonder which Garmin watch would be best suited to track a ski tour activity ? Forerunner 935 or 735xt ? This watch would also be used for other sports such as cycling and running and maybe normal skiing.

Many thanks in advance for you help :)

  • Or should I directly upgrade to the fenix product range ? Knowing I already have a Garmin Edge Explore. The strava app on my Iphone just isn't accurate enough in my opinion...

  • Both watches are fine for your needs. Even a forerunner 245 will suits your needs

There will probably be people who say a 935 or 945 is way better than a 735 because it has a gazillion more features, but in day to day life you won’t notice it.

Since your edge explorer doesn’t support pshysio true up, there is no immediate need for a watch that supports it (735 doesn’t) If you plan to upgrade your edge explore that might be something to consider.

No need to upgrade to fenix. It’s basically the same watch in an other case. The only reason to buy a fenix over a forerunner is looks. (Again, some people tell you a fenix is better, but most of then cannot explain it)

Buy the one that best suites your budget.

  • Many thanks for you answer. It helped me a lot.

Are there enough differences to consider the 945 over the 935 ? Knowing the 935 is already about 4 years old if I'm correct...

  • I’ve got a 935 for 4 years now.

945 has maps. I use navigation a lot on my 935 but that’s only a follow the breadcrumb. Which is fine most of the times. Sometimes when paths are very close to each other I might take the wrong one. On the other hand, the display of watches is very small, so even with maps it’s sometimes hard to see.

945 has music, but my iPod is more convenient.

945 has better batterylife during activities with gps

945 has bloodoxygen meter. Which isn’t accurate and is not very usefull for most people, and uses a lot of power, so most people turn it off.

945 has garmin pay. Not supported where I live.

945 has an other gps chip, which uses less power. But both are good enough for normal use.

945 has crash detection. That might be interesting for you. But only if you have your phone with you.

945 has a updated heartrate sensor. But personally, I still use a cheststrap because optical heartrate doesn’t work for me (also not on other brands)

945 is waterproof up to 100meter, 935 up to 50m.

For me, none of this is enough to upgrade.

  • Great thanks again for these useful informations.

I will sleep over it and decide what I'll do/buy

Agree with Elbo‘s recommendations. I don‘t think additional features of 945 justify its higher price compared to 935. 735xt doesn‘t have barometric altimeter, which is for me significant disadvantage. The barometric altimeter of 935 works quite well for trail running as well as for alpine or cross-country skiing. For alpine skiing it stops recording automatically when you are on the lift (ascending). Therefore I would go for FR935.

  • Many thanks to you ! I made my decision and went for the 935. I just bought it. It's incredible how the watch is feather light ! You don't even feel it when it's on you wrist
