Vo2 Max huge increase - way to reset this?

Hi all,

last week my Garmin showed me an increase after a run from 51 to 60. Was even a normal session with normal heart rate and average speed... So there was something wrong - especially since its now dropped again to 56.

Is there a way to reset the Vo2 max on the watch? (I just found the settings on Garmin web where I can manually change it but I suppose this will not change the numbers in the watch).

Cheers

Nick

  • How do you use the Vo2 that your watch calculates?

If there are no changes to your training plan based on Vo2, then why bother?

Vo2 on your watch is not measured. It's calculated, based on averages and statistics. It's an algorithm which has bugs and biasses.

    But to answer your question:

You could master reset your watch (you have to disable Physio TrueUp, otherwise after the reset your watch will sync data back from garmin connect).

You could also wait some time. Eventually your Vo2 will return to "normal".

  • No no really. But it still gives a good indication where I am standing during the year (e.g. with the race times - I know.. to be taken with caution).

I am doing the latter right now (waiting until it returns to normal). Although I find it weird that it suddenly jumps up and now only slowly returns again. Shouldnt the watch provide the calculations after 2 runs to show that the 60 estimate is far off and it should return to 51/52 right away?

  • I presume (basically based on nothing, just assumption ) that previous values are taking into account when the next value is calculated.

That way vo2max is less volatile.

  • yes probably, thanks anyway!
