HR zones for training : comparison between LT / MHR / HRR with Garmin default percentages

Hello. In Garmin you can set your heart rate zones using Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) or Heart Rate Reserve (HRR). Default percentages are based on MHR but they look more suitable for HRR. Click on the link, set your MHR and Resting Heart Rate (RHR) and check differences of beats between MHR and HRR modes with Garmin default percentages. Then, if you want, you can use my own percentages for MHR based on pace for endurance fundamental, marathon, half marathon and 10km.

Garmin also offers zones based off of LTHR. However, every training metric (effect, load, recovery, vo2max) is calculated by %MHR during your activity, rendering the different methods useless. No idea why they offer RHR and LTHR when the algorithms then don't use them.

  • Yep, i just want to show the difference between MHR et HRR with Garmin default percentages. But if people want to use MHR to train, it is better to change the percentages to be in the right zone. I don't really care about Garmin or Firstbeat algorithms.

  • Hi, I added Lactate Threshold in spreadsheet if you want to compare more.

  • Great spreadsheet thanks.

  • These are great spreadsheets. Can I ask, what is your reasoning choosing the heart rates you did?

  • The problem is that Garmin is limited to exactly 5 heart rate zones, no more and no less. Some structured training plans have different numbers of zones. For example the 80/20 Endurance plans use 7 zones. Garmin ought to allow configuring a custom number of zones.

  • Thanks for your message Dave. This percentages are based on average heart rate during fundamental endurance (75 % MHR), marathon (85 %), half marathon (90 %) and 10km (95 %). This percentages are my goals. So when I train for half marathon (Z4 ) I have to be between 85 and 92 % MHR to get 90 % MHR average. I also tried to have linear increase because heart rate increase proportionally to speed. I am pretty near to HRR method. In spreadsheets, click on link to get more informations.
