Cracks in HR sensor Forerunner 935

When I routinely checked my 935 this morning I discovered 5 separate cracks in/on the HR sensor on the back! I wear the watch all the time (as my Garmin account can approve) and am, just like my colleague athletes, very careful in handling and wearing my watch. As I check regularly these cracks are new to me and I'm wearing the watch since January this year. Now what to do? As a triathlete I swim twice a week, and biking and running of course.

  • As I can see you have the bundle version. Although hard to believe they used a different hardware version on that watch, maybe the version you got just was a lucky batch with good resin. Keep thumbs crossed that you won't face these cracks on yours

  • I just bought a used 935 and it was in almost perfect condition except when it arrived those cracks appeared and the seller said they were never there before he sent the watch. The watch smells strongly of deodorant but I doubt that is the cause. He said he never swam with it. He didn't send it in the original box but a box of similar size and wrapped in bubble wrap and a silky pouch. The heart rate still works good but I'm scared the cracks will progress.  Also had a 245M for one year and the sensor looked brand new (shame the screen developed a huge white ball of dead pixels) ugh, Garmin come on.

Hi Theo Herpers! I have just bought the same watch. Unfortunately, in turned out that it has got the same issue as yours (but so far it's still in better shape than your watch). I was testing the HR sensor by comparing it after waking up with the heart beat checked manually from my wirst and it was correct. However, today I did a first running and I am not sure anymore if my HR sensor works fine, since I normally get much higher HR results during my trainings ( today I could only achieve about 163bpm - definitely too low for this kind of training ). Did you manage to check somehow (i.e. comparing with the HR strap?) that these cracks on the HR sensor does not disturb proper working of the sensor as Garmin says?

  • Hi Tom,

I did turn in my 935 not because it malfunctioned. As Garmin people had told me, the sensor would function despite the cracks. However after a couple of months I noticed not only more cracks but there were particles losing and that imo was a bad sign. As I wrote earlier, I got a refurbished 935 with full two years Garmin guarantee. Finally I donated the 935 to my partner and bought the 945, because of Garmin Pay and Spotify. I am totally satisfied with the Garmin service.

    Best regards, Theo

  • Hi Theo.

Unfortunately, I've got the same cracking issue on my 935 OHR. Took it to charge, just noticed right now.

At this point, since it's out of warranty, I'm afraid there's not much I can do about it.

You've said that the sensor would function despite the cracks. How well does it perform? What about when the particles started to flake?

Seriously considering it may be the time for me to buy a HRM to backup the OHR lol =)

    Thanks in advance, man!

  • Well I never noticed a problem with the functionality of my 935, despite the cracks. And I followed advice from Garmin (Netherlands) as that the watch would still be functioning. Nevertheless the cracks continued to grow and finally, when the particles started to let go I decided to send the watch back to Garmin and I got a refurbished 935 in return (this was the original offer from Garmin, if I wasn't satisfied with the 'cracked' 935 even if it would still be functioning). I must add that I called in under warranty as soon as I discovered the first few cracks.

Hope this is a sufficient reply to your question. Let me know how you deal with Garmin. In general they have provided excellent service the two times I had issues (with the 935 and with the HRM).

    Best regards, Theo

  • I'm sorry for my delayed response, but no I couldn't check for sure if the HR sensor was malfunctioning. I didn't notice any difference in the data during the entire period I used it. The only reason I traded it was because of the particles that started to let go after 8 months.

Hope this is a useful answer.

    Best regards, Theo

  • Thanks for your answer.

Surely brings peace to my heart to know that, even cracked, things still roll.

There's not much of support from Garmin here in Brazil, not even a online chat or phone available for calls. So I'm afraid there will be no fast lanes to deal directly with them.

My 935 seems to be functioning with no flaws whatsoever, since it's still tracking my HR with no gasps at all. The cracks aren't massive, so I'll just keep it under observation on the long haul and see how it ends. So far, so good!

  • Also, at first it was just cracking, but today the sensor turned off altogether and the LEDs do not light up. I checked in the settings - the pulse on the arm is in position automatically, that is, it is turned on.
