Why did charging port change?

I had Fenix 2, Forerunner 220 and my wife uses 235. I recently got myself FR935. Can anyone explain why the charging port changed so much? I suspect that the cable is more durable this way but I don't know what about the port. And also - it prevents to charge it on the go (although with such battery...).

  • I believe Garmin wanted to move to one cable for all its watches, and one that offered a physically secure connection.

  • There is that, but the charging cable for the Marq is different to the 5+, 945...

  • physically secure?

Mine's not. I always have to gently lay my watch down when charging, otherwise the cable pops out. Very annoying.

And hoping my cat doesn't come sniffing around, otherwise my watch isn't charged.

This is especially irritating when I connect my watch to my macbook. When the cable pops out with out proper ejecting the device on my laptop my watch freezes.

My previous watch, a Suunto Ambit, had a quite large, but failsafe charging cable. Much beter than the minimalistic but failing Garmin one. At least in my experience. (and the same for my girlfriends fenix 5s)

  • I just wonder why did they drop clamp version. Was it that they broke and were more expensive to make?

  • Well, what Garmin wanted, and what Garmin actually produced are not always the same.

I have had no problems with my cable. But it certainly sounds like yours isn't working the way it is supposed to. I'd suggest contacting Garmin Support on this - they will likely send out of new cable. Of course, if the problem is with the watch port rather than the cable, that may need to be returned instead. but start with the cable.
