why would I even connect my FR935 to WiFi

Hi.

In regard to this topic:
https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-935-aa/1472485-live-track-usually-fails-when-workout-loaded

It appears more and more that switching from WiFi to not connected anymore causes the live track to fail.
Now I figure that as the watch is connected to my smartphone anyway, I would not need the watch to connect to WiFi anyway.

So what would happen if my watch in no longer going to connect to WiFi, and only uses the Bluetooth connection to my phone?

I believe the major difference would be that with WiFi turned off, completed workouts will not automatically upload to Garmin Connect. With WiFi turned off, after you finish a workout you will need to launch the Garmin Connect app on your phone and then sync the app with your watch via Bluetooth in order to get your workouts off of the watch.
  • I always keep my wifi off in order to save battery. I only turn it on to download workouts. My phone always has the GC on ( in order to get data such as wind to be used in the run power and weather data also ).
  • So what would happen if my watch in no longer going to connect to WiFi, and only uses the Bluetooth connection to my phone?

Nothing...as long as you have a good connection via GCM and your phone.

I have not noticed any significant impact on battery life having Wifi on.
  • In your linked thread, the issue is with GCM on the phone switching from WIFI to Cellular network and has nothing to do with WIFI on the watch itself.

As philipshambrook pointed out as long as you have a good connection to your phone, the watch will never use the WiFi. In my testing, the only time the watch will use the WiFi is when you save an activity and don't have a BLE connection to GCM on the phone (assuming auto upload is enabled), or when you manually connect to WiFi in the control menu or settings menu. At that point it will turn on the WiFi to check for a connection and will upload your activity and/or sync any other data with Garmin Connect including new FW. If the BLE link to the phone is active, then the watch will only use that method.
