Open Water Swimming - distance measure incorrect

The distance measure for Open Water was OK up until around mid Feb 19. Now it is measuring about half the actual distance. I updated to v12.50 sometime in the last month. Anyone else having Open Water distance issues on this release?
  • Swimrun training session on Sunday. Swim distances are pretty close to what we'd expect - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3448864918

Whitednj I had a 1880m OW swim today using firmware 12.50 and the distance and tracking looks OK. I had issues with 12.40 ie losing GPS, until I monitored the strength of the GPS signal (added a GPS data field to an OW screen). When treading water I found my hand goes underwater and with the GPS data field you can see the signal gets lost and you can then actively bring your hand to the surface to regain the signal. I had a problem with an OW swim with Beta 12.41 ie path was a zig zag shape. Beta 12.42 was OK similar to 12.50.

I don't get it. Worked perfectly this morning. I didn't do anything different the other 10 swims that did not register correctly. Thanks for your feedback :).
  • Due to the frequency used by the GPS signal, just a few millimeters of water will completely block it. If you swim with a typical crawl stroke then your wrist should be above water often enough to get a decent lock. But even with a crawl stroke I would occasionally get screwy tracks, like jumping to the other side of a wharf and back. Haven't done an open water swim with the version 12.50 firmware yet.

Thought I'd better update ... I have more consistency now I set the Open Water on around 30 seconds before I hit the water and hit start. It appears it's taking a bit longer to find those pesky satellites these days.Once in the water all seems to be OK.

hello whitednj,  i have the same problem. the same as it seems to be half of the real distance, and this is a place I know well the distance. also the same as two days ago it worked ok and today didnt.  any comment suggestion? have you solved it already? thanks

  • Yes man about 400 meters less. I was benchmarking against my Suunto and what I have discovered was horrible. This 935 I thought was the watch now I think it's junk. They disabled OHR, distance is wrong, pace is wrong....c'mon guys you can do better thatn just charge more.

  • just upgraded to 945LTE from 735XT. wore both today.  the actual swim courses recorded are almost exactly the same on a map but 945LTE watch shows the distance as almost half of the course that watch itself says I swam. the 735XT records everything perfectly. I think it has to do with the 945LTE showing 10 minutes less "moving time" even though I didn't stop.

  • Dear All, I have problems with my 935. Altimeter in activity is allways too high. Distance in open water swimming allways too short (app. 700m recorded for 1000m really). Do you think it can come from the firmware ? I have 21. Do someone have infos about the release date of the new one ? Thanks

  • I benchmarked 935 vs Suunto and on average the distance comes up short by 30% and then the pace is slower as well. Sometimes better sometimes worst but on average 30% measured over 4 month. So basically if Garmin would come up with an update of firmware 21.1 where they would multiply the distance by a factor of 1.3, calories by (1.3+100), then that would correct the rest of results and then Openwater Swim mode would work correctly. Also in the Openwater Swim mode OHR isn't working and that's too bad. I wrote on many blogs hopping that Garmin will do something about it but this seems more like no concern to anyone. So I have scheduled to exchange my 935 for Polar Vantage V in 2 days. On Polar Vantage OHR is working, distance should be correct and also in the running mode provides power. Garmin has a more advanced platform but when it isn't working there's nothing I can do about it. All this writing is a waste and the only solution was to exchange my watch for any Suunto, Polar or Coros that cover Openwater correctly and Polar it is. That's my solution to many months of complaining without any feedback. Regards
