Simplest way to stop and save an activity?

Apologies if this has already been covered before, I wasn't sure what search terms to use and "stop save" threw up too many results.

Is there a quicker method of stopping and saving an activity when you're done?

Right now it's: Finish my activity. Press "start-stop". Wait a few moments as it processes the request. Press" down" to go from "resume" to "save." Press "start-stop" again. Wait even longer while the watch computes and shows activity stats. Press "down" to get to "Done." Finally press "start-stop" to get to my watchface.

I don't want to be fiddling with my watch for that long.

Usually I'll end an activity, press "start-stop," go about doing other stuff and forget to finish the activity shutdown procedure (at least it seems like a procedure) until the watch buzzes at me half an hour later complaining about something, probably running down the battery if it's still got the GPS running.

What I'd really like would be something like a two button or long press- say "start-stop" + "down"- to immediately stop, save, and return me to the watchface. Obviously, the watch is probably going to need some time to crunch the data before it can display the watchface, but there should be nothing further I need to do. No buttons to press, just wait.

If I want to review my activity, I can go the the widget and see it there. If I want to pause, I can just do it the usual way, Likewise, if I want to delete it, I can either end the activity the conventional way, or delete it through the widget.

Please tell me there is something simple I missed. Thanks.
  • I won't say this is simple, but it might be faster in most cases:
    - Press START to pause
    - Press BACK/LAP to see "pause menu" immediately
    - Press DOWN to scroll to Save
    - Press START to Save
    - Press BACK repeatedly until you see the watchface

Except for the last part, you shouldn't even need to look at the watch.

EDIT: I also think that an optional "Save Activity and Exit" hotkey would be great. You could suggest this idea to Garmin:

  • Once you've pressed to 'Save' there's nothing else you need do. Eventually, it will go back to the watch face without further interaction. Not sure how long, but it does. So, once you've pressed 'Stop', then pressed 'Save', that's it.
  • This just reminds me of the Konami code. Not that I knew how to do it.

It also seems that you still might need to look at the watch since it sometimes drops other button presses if you do them too rapidly.

Thanks for the link to the suggestion site. I trust it gets better visibility than stuff posted here.

But I really hate how that site strips all carriage returns from the form you fill out.

Which activity does this work for you?

With the cycling activity app, it stays on the activity summary screen until you press "down" to get to the "done" option, then "start-stop" to select/execute it.

Okay, actually, I've got a long press set to go back to the home screen that works at that point.

Oops, never mind, I guess I never gave it long enough.
