Treadmill Running

Today I wanted to do a 10km tempo workout but we have strong winds. So I decided to go at a gym near home since on the track it would be impossible to do it. !!!

I ran 10 km (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3411045595) at 14.4 (at least based on the treadmill) and my watch was saying a lot shorter, more than 1 km !!! Even though that after the warm up I used the option save and calibrate !!
Before the calibration that I did after the warm up (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3411045785) the watch recorded more than the treadmill.

so, I am a little disappointed from 935 in the treadmill .. :(

1) from the distance recorded..

2) from the pace graph. Since the speed on the treadmill was steady at 14,4 km/h I would expected that the pace in the activity would be more or less a steady line but for sure not the graph that is displaying!!.

also another "issue" I had concern the heart rate. I was wearing my HR-Tri belt but the watch wasn't connected to it. after finished all activities I used the Download Heart Rate from the History of the activity. how sure I should be that the heart rate graph is correct?

So, since I assume that they exist peopled using Treadmill Running more than in the outdoors, I would really appreciate their comments. Maybe I did something wrong.

Thanks,
John B.
  • In my experience, a footpod works a lot better for pace on treadmills/indoor track, although it's not perfect. In contrast, the wrist accelerometer (which is normally used) will be off if you just stop swinging your arms for any reason. And the wrist accel can never be as accurate at estimating pace as a footpod, just because the motion of your foot is more important than the motion of your arm, for running.

As far as the calibration goes, it may only be good for a certain range of paces (which is also true of the footpod). So if your warmup was very slow, that might've actually worked against your favour. Probably better to calibrate your "typical" treadmill runs, instead.
  • I used the wrist based pace for the first time in ages recently - and it was showing 7:30/mile vs 9:00/mile on the treadmill! I usually use runscribe for pace on the treadmill, but as I'm rehabbing from an injury, this was just a short run that I hadn't planned - so I didn't have the runscribes with me,
If you want any kind of accuracy from the treadmill, get a footpod. Even a cheap garmin or old Adidas one is far better than the inbuilt sensor.
You're heart rate data should be fine. Does it look about right ?
  • As others have said above, get a foot pod, and don't trust the treadmill's distance. Attached is a sample of what my treadmill running looks like with a foot pod. According to the treadmill I was running at 6:00 min/km but according to my foot pod it was 6:30 min/km.
