Swimming with Forerunner 935 is terrible

Hello. I bought 935 to replace my Samsung Gear Sport.

My basic sport is swimming, next is running and bike. So, when I made my first swim, I was very disappointed with how professional sports watches tracking the distance in comparison with amateur Gear Sport.

For samsung I just run training before entering pool and stop after exit. And in 99% I receive correctly measured distance. What is interesting, there even the size of the pool does not need to be specified. I can change my swim style in the middle of pool. I can rest and don't push pause. Even backstroke with outstretched arms - always correctly tracked the distance. How samsung track it's all without GPS - really magic, but it work's in amateur clocks!

About forerunner 935.
It's ok, that watch doesn't measure HR in water, however even with garmin external HR monitor I can't receive notification about too high HR. I think, even with inaccurate measurements in water watch can handle this feature, notify me with vibro on too high rate.

But logic, when I got three times +50 meters in 10 seconds when rest - it's trash for professional sports watches. World records for 50m is 20.91sec, just add this limit in logic. Backstroke with outstretched arms count 0 when I swim 50m. Even when I always push pause when rest, and not change my swim style in the middle of pool - I can’t trust the results with confidence.

You even made video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjoPdm7p6Lk

But I think you must be better than samsung. Just implement normal logic for your professional sports watches.

Thank you.
  • It works differently to the Samsung, you need to actively pause at the end of a set, I find this very useful as if I'm doing 15x100m off 2m30 the pause screen shows me the info I need to know when to set off again.

I've swum 229,641m this year using my 935 and I reckon it's missed a total of single figure lengths in all that time.

I'd advise taking your time to work out how the 935 works, it will clearly be different to the Samsung, and it may take some time for you to adjust to how it works.

There's no logic to this statement. If you're getting inaccurate measurements, then the high HR alert will also be inaccurate.
  • I agree that the watch is quite accurate for consistent swimmers who follow instructions for use. I am not sure what you mean by "backstroke with outstretched arms." Is this regular (Olympic) backstroke or elementary back stroke (like a frog)? The latter would not register as there is too much gliding. Similarly it cannot detect kicking and would register "zero". For the latter or when you know it does not work, use "drill mode" and manually input laps. Finally, the HRM cannot transmit through water, and thus only downloads when above water, so it cannot provide online feedback. If that does not resolve your concerns, congratulations on your "world record." ;-)
