HRM-RUN not found by new 935

Had to post to see if anyone has any tips as it is driving me crazy.
Have had a 235 and been using HRM-Run strap since the start of this year and no issues (changed battery after 6 months as I am a little anal).
But then got a new 935 yesterday and when I paired the HRM-Run to it - it straight away took my HR up to the 240s within seconds even when standing still (my resting HR is generally around 40) - took it for a run and just went up and down between 150 and 240.
Re-connected it with the old 235 and same it was showing in the 240s - it had never done this in the months previously.
So I gave it a thorough wash - generally do this monthly and rinse after most runs and have changed the battery. Re-connected it to both watches and it again shot straight up to the 240s.

I disconnected it and then left it overnight. Then this morning it won't connect to either watch - the device cannot be found. I have subsequently changed the battery several times and called Garmin Support - they suggested the reverse polarity (holding battery upside down) - tried this 5 or so times and still no device to be found.

Would love if anyone else has any other ideas/solutions - I was really looking forward to being able to use the running dynamics finally so this is really annoying me.
Any feedback is much appreciated.
  • looks simply like a broken/fault strap, if even the shorting trick (reverse battery) didn't reset it. 935 could be evil sometimes, but not at the point to kill a strap :D
  • In my experience, change the strap battery could mess everything. I realize that after you change the battery, the water/sweat seal didn’t work as should. So, you have a short circuit on the sensor. Open it again and look for some rust.
  • I had the EXACT same problem when I got my 935. The HRM-Run (red version) that was being used previously with a 620, 220, and Concept 2 rowing machine suddenly started misbehaving then died after being paired with the 935, which I thought was due to the second generation running dynamics firmware update. Tried everything, finally gave up and started looking around for a new HRM-Run.

But luckily for me after a few days of not being able to find a cheap price for a new HRM-Run I decided to try again and this time it worked, and has worked perfectly since then. No idea why it broke and suddenly started working again.

Try removing the battery for a long time, eg 1 minute or more and see if that brings it back to life. Garmin recommended that to me when I was having trouble with mine and it seemed to fix the problem I was having.
  • ~Delete the HRM from the 935 of known devices.
    ~Soft reset the watch.
~Make sure the HRM is dry completely before opening the unit to change the battery.
~Remove the battery from HRM and replace with a fresh battery. Wait at least a minute before doing this.
~Re pair HRM with 935. Test by soaking the electrodes in water (or use Electrode gel) and make sure you're warmed up to make sure the strap is getting a legitimate reading.

If the issue continues, Electrodes are done. When you start getting high HR like this, the electrodes are just done. Having used Garmin straps for years now, max lifespan I've gotten from them (with nearly five days a week of use consistently) is approx a year and a half. I've had though one go at around eight months before.

Thanks for mentioning this. Wondered if it was just me. I've gone through 2 HRM-Tri's (used them ~5 times per week) in less than 2 years, despite all the proper care. I switched to the good old 1-piece HRM-1G (and an RD pod) for running. Works great for me.
  • Ahh, have tried all these and tips and as I was afraid of - it appears it might have died. Have only had it since February this year - but I run around 6 hours a week and sometimes doubles/triples and have I never run without it.
Will have to get a new one. At least the OHR on the 935 doesn't seem too bad - compared to the 235.
Thanks for all the tips people

Soft reset was the step I was missing. Thx.
