GARMIN, please fix EPO updates via GCM!

For a considerable time now, GCM is not able to update the EPO file on the watch properly. Although it is performing some sort of "Software Update" every day indicating it is uploading some files to the watch, the EPO status remains "Expired" until the watch is synchronised with the Garmin Express application via a PC from time to time.

It would be highly appreciated if Garmin could fix the GCM app on Android so it would also be able to correctly update the EPO file as the Garmin Express application is capable of.

Garmin, could you please take care?
  • What version of GCM are you using? There was an issue with an earlier version regarding this.
  • Fenix 3 have the same problem last 6 monts
  • I am using the latest Android version, 4.13.5 with the latest watch firmware, 11.00.
This issue is definetely not fixed as my watch is still showing expired EPO despite GCM did everything regarding synchronization it could, e.g. performing several syncs and leaving the watch synchronized with GCM for about one hour.
  • When you have a windows notebook, you may download the Foxrunner tool, which updates the EPO and backups your activities as soon you connect your watch to the USB port for charging the battery...

Do you still see that every day? The Device Sync Audit log may contain some pointer to what fails.

A while ago I saw this "Sending software update" every day, and it was always failing. Routes, workouts, EPO didn't transfer. Eventually this "updating" stopped and everything synced again. I tried so many things that I have no idea what, if anything, fixed it.

I have checked that already, the "Software Update" seems to refer updating the apps and activities. Could easily be checked when connecting the watch via USB as a mass storage device and then simply search for files last modified.

Unfortunately this also proved two things:

The EPO.bin file was never touched by GCM, it still showed the original date when last synchronized with Garmin Express. Furthermore the sync log in GCM does not show any failures or problems, related to it everything is fine and no remaining elements are left for update.

I really wonder if there is anyone around who could actually prove that the GCM Android application really DOES update the EPO.bin file on the 935, this would be interesting to compare what is different there.

I don't know if it helps, but I haven't connected to Garmin Express for a month and my EPO is current. I am connected to wifi, so I don't know if it's updating that way or through GCM for Android.
  • WiFi ist different I guess as this bypasses the GCM app for sure. Still I wonder if this is a bug in GCM or if this is a known issue limiting the functionality of GCM on purpose.
  • Never connected my fenix 5 to pc. Sync only with gcm. Epo ok last 6 months. Fenix 3 wont update EPO with gcm. Only pc.
    Gcm on iphone 7.

Thanks, so it looks like the Iphone app is fine with the update and only the Android version seems to cause trouble. Still wondering what it could be...
