API Switch to Openweathermap.org

Anyone know why a lot of the watch faces switched to only allowing Openweathermap.org APIs to work? I had been using the Darksky API with the SC8 watch faces, but will the latest update to SC8 darksky doesnt work anymore and I had to get a new one with Openweather. unfortunately, the temps Openweather is giving me on my watch (and on their website, as to make sure it wasn't picking up a different location) is about 10-15 degrees off. I tried to reach out to both Openweather and the App developer, but didnt know if anyone else was having issues with their weather APIs too. Sucks being forced to use this API, especially when its wrong!
  • Update. Ok, I see in the app store that SC8 now uses OWM.

Yup! it was pretty frustrating just finding a place to get a working API in the first place and then saw that DarkSky had one. They are the best for my area in the mountains of Colorado in forecasting, so it was nice to be able to use them. Now being forced to use OWM is a bummer. I am not sure how they are getting their data, it seems that they dont have as many stations up here so they are just guessing based on the few that they have which is obviously pretty inaccurate. A whole 10°F off this morning...ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1430723.jpg

That is a nice watch face, Sagerist. Haven't come across it on CIQS, may I ask what it's called?
  • phl0w that looks like SC8 watch face.
  • This kind of comes down to one thing - money. By that I mean OWM is free, and DarkSky really isn't. While you can get a free key from DS, it's really just for developers, and not general public. For general access, it's a paid key, as DS doesn't want to hand out 100k free keys for watch faces. They have support to handle, and don't get a dime in return if they are all free.

In CIQ there's no easy way to charge for things, so with a paid key, it's likely the dev would have to eat some of the costs. I know this as I used to have things in the app store that used DarkSky. I've also used Weather Underground, and there, as they didn't want to support all kinds of end users with the API keys, they stopped issuing any keys last May, even for developers.

So why the switch? It comes down to "OWM is free"

    That's the one, thanks!

I signed up for OWM, and pasted the key I got emailed (more than 24hrs ago) into the settings of SC8 but neither get sunrise/set, nor weather.
  • phl0w Seems to work fine on my square 920XT as well.

Mine says no GPS/ No data in Sunrise/Weather fields.
  • Start up an activity that uses GPS, get a lock, discard the activity and go back to the watch face. That should set the location for the watch face.

Thanks, that took care of sunrise/set times. Weather still says no data. I guess my API key hasn't been activated yet. It's been close to two days now, and the mail says a couple hours.
