Don't use Running Dynamics if Battery Life is an issue

Turns out that the watch sends speed data over the ANT+ channel (twice a second) to the Running Dynamics (RD) device so it is able to calculate Vertical Ratio.

If obtaining the absolute maximum battery life is important the last thing you want is your watch transmitting twice a second, even if it is only a low power ANT+ message. So it is either no HR at all or get an ANT+ (not BLE as that is bidirectional as well) HR only strap.

If you are interested in the technical detail head over to the ANT Alliance website ( https://www.thisisant.com/ ), sign up for free as an 'adoptor' and download the Running Dynamics device profile.
  • The big power drains are GPS, backlight, and the OHR LED's (in that order).

The amount of power consumed from additional uptime on the ANT+ chip is miniscule. Of course, by doing away with RD, you may also reduce processor usage in calculating and writing data to file.

  • It's not the uptime of the ANT+ chip that I'm referring to, it's the fact that the watch is transmitting as well as receiving over the ANT+ channel.
  • @CloggyAbroad: where on the ANT+ site did you see RD device profile? I am logged in as ANT+ adopter and do not see it on https://www.thisisant.com/developer/...vice-profiles/

edit: Found it here, it has no clear link, but you can find it by searching on "dynamics" on the site. https://www.thisisant.com/resources/...ning-dynamics/

Well, finally. I specifically bought the RD pod over a year ago, to experiment with and program for. Running dynamics don't really mean much to me. No data necessary to tell me I'm a mediocre runner with terrible running style. It was a big bummer that the device profile wasn't made public then, and during the extremely long wait for it, I started to pay some attention to the the running dynamics data and later running power. But now, finally.. I'm going to play with it!
  • Same frustration here. They established and announced a standard and then took 18 months to make said standard available for all to see. What is the point of a standard if you keep it a secret? Anyway, glad you found it and have fun playing with it.
