Turn by turn notifications - Courses

Hi Guys,

Apologies if this has been answered before but i've had a quick look through the forum and can't find an exact answer.

OK so i'm fairly new to the Forerunner 935 (and Garmin in general).
The other day i created a course using the Garmin connect website (desktop version). I then rode the course and i had turn by turn notifications all the way through the ride...all good.

I then noticed you can create courses via the Garmin connect android app. I created a course then went to ride it. However when going through this course, i got no turn by turn instructions.
The course was just one single instruction, where it only showed the distance to the finish.

I'd like to point out the courses were created entirely through Garmin connect and was not imported at all from any other source.

Is it a known problem where courses generated via the app do not include directions? Should i be using the desktop version of Garmin connect instead?

Thanks in advance.
  • This is my experience. I've create a course via website and I went out for a run trying the new course. Well, I didn't get any turn by turn notification as you said.
Then, I've create a new one, went out for a run and I've got "some" notifications but not all and the missed notification were the ones in which I didn't make a "proper" turn but only a "light" one. This is because 935 doesn't have preloaded maps so it just rely on the change of directions.
My conclusions is that you have a proper notification if you make at least a 90 degree turn (or close to 90°), otherwise the watch consider you are running almost straight. For example, if you create a circle route with just right or just left slight turns till you close the circle you don't get any notification.
Don't know if I was enough clear but it's also difficult to explain...

Hi Andrea, thanks for your response but that doesn't make sense.
The ride I created was over 30 miles long with plenty of sharp turns and i got zero notifications. I only get the problem of no turn notifications if I create the course via the Garmin connect app.
A course created via the website seems to work fine.

OK, I seem to have got to the bottom of this and managed to replicate it using the same course.
If you ride a course backwards there are no TBT notifications.
If you ride the course forwards there are TBT notifications.

Don't know if this needs flagging up to be fixed?
  • Just to clarify, you aren't riding a course that has been saved as a separate course in reverse? You are expecting to be able to ride a course in the opposite direction to which it was saved and have TBT?

I think that's a bit much to expect as that would require some complex processing on the fly to occur. Not sure the processor could handle that. Still, worthwhile making a suggestion to Garmin to see if they would consider implementing such a feature. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

    Hi Philip,

The course I created in garmin connect is only one course. I am simply trying to ride it in reverse by going to Bike > Navigation > Courses > Select course* > Do course in reverse.

As the course does not have any course points I would have thought that the watch generated the TBT directions once you have pressed 'Do course' because that is when you receive the 50 points exceeded limit (or whatever it is). You do not receive that notification if you go to do it in reverse.

I can't imagine it's any more tasking on the processor as it all gets worked out before hand just like if you were riding the course the forward way.

    Correct me if I'm wrong
  • I can't correct you because you might be right. However, I suspect there's bit more to it when riding in the reverse direction. Turns are switched from left to right, distance between turns change. All this needs reprocessing, assuming that the reciprocal of the course is not computed initially. Start a conversation with Garmin and see what they have to say.

I could of course be totally wrong and all this happens on the fly anyway...

Sorry to tell you, but the FR935 's advertised turn by turn navigation is very limited. I would highly suggest investing in a bike computer if you're cycling frequently. better screen resolution and functionality.

On another note, I have a YouTube channel where I talk about swimming, cycling, running, tips, and reviews. Come check it out and subscribe if you like. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcdmF3d8eR5VOQQkZjEQr3g

Since you asked, you're wrong ;)
The course points are added by Garmin Connect before the course is sent to the watch. You need a map with junctions to generate these, and the 935 doesn't have one. The kind of turn also changes when you reverse the course (left becomes right generally) and, for whatever reason, the watch doesn't even try to do this.
