Garmin added the ability to disable the lap key!

I'm probably the last person to notice this, but Garmin actually added the option for disabling the lap key at some point. If anyone at Garmin is reading, thanks for listening to us! :) This is something that I legit thought would never happen.

When you disable the lap key (per-activity setting), Back takes you back to the watchface. It's perfect for a race or a long run when you probably don't want manual laps.

Previously, it was really baffling to see that Fenix 5 had this option and not the 935. I did notice that disabling the lap key also removes the Lap option in the pause menu, which is probably not what some people wanted, but it doesn't bother me. Anyone who still needs the occasional manual lap can set up a two-button hotkey which should be impossible to trigger by accident.
  • Haven't tried the key-lock scenario, nor was I aware of it. I don't have a Fenix 5 to compare with unfortunately.

To be clear, there is a new a option in the activity menu (where applicable):
    Lap Key: On/Off

On: Same behaviour as before. Pressing Back during an activity takes a manual lap. "Lap" appears in the pause menu.
Off: New behaviour, Pressing Back during an activity returns to the watch face. "Lap" does not appear in the pause menu.

  • Thank you . I didn't notice this option. It is nice ! Thx Garmin !
I prefer to deactivate "Lap" and configure it by a long press on "back" Button. It often happen that I create by mistake a "lap" because I push the back button by error ...
  • THANK YOU... and thanks Garmin for doing this. I'd submitted a feature request to this effect (including screen caps of the APAC 935 showing the function).

Not sure if that had anything to do with it, but the feature's inclusion on the Fenix and APAC 935 lines and not the ROW 935 was ... odd.
  • Nice! So with lap button disabled pressing it brings you to the watchface but activity will continue I assume (and pressing start gets you back to the normal data fields)?

Exactly. Plus, in "Settings->System->Hot Keys", you can have "HOLD BACK" mapped to "LAP" so you still have that functionality... when you deliberately want it, not when you accidentally hit "back" with your wrist during a workout.
  • You can actually also press Back to return to an activity in progress from the widgets/watchface, although annoyingly, not if the activity is paused. Start also works (whether the activity is paused or not), but only from the watchface.

The same applies if you used a Widgets hotkey during an activity to return to the watchface.
  • Good that this feature is finally available at the 935.
Not so good: Garmin's update policy. I trust gas station sushi more than official Garmin changelogs. Or did I miss something?
  • Love this and have wanted this as I have accidently pressed the back button one too many times and created a manual lap on accident.

While I have never mistakenly pressed the lap button, this new option is definitely something I will activate, or deactivate, for that matter, and use hold for manual laps.
Now, can we PLEASE have it next, so that auto lap is automatically changed to splits during structured workouts, i.e. that have more than 1 step. As it's now, most users create a different profile for interval sessions and the like where auto lap is disabled, and use the run app with auto lap enabled for sessions that are just one step.
