Heart rate strap use

Hi,

I sometimes use an external heart rate strap when I do hiit training.
when I want to use it I have to enable it in settings and when I start an activity the watch tries to the strap and connects. So much for that.
but when I go running or spinning I don't use an external strap.
The Garmin strap ( and probably all) is motion operated so it enables in my bag and not when I put it on my chest.
So when I start an activity where I don't use my strap it sometimes find it when it's in my bag and then connect so I don't get readings.
So I have to disable and enable the strap every time.

1) are there straps with an on/off switch?
2) is there an way to get an shortcut to the sensors on the shortcut menu?

(and yes I can leave the strap out of my bag when I don't want to use it but I sometimes forget that)
  • Which strap are you using?

With the type that has a removable sensor module (HRM3 "soft strap" or even the HRM-Run, first version), you can just un-button the sensor from the strap and it breaks the circuit, stopping transmission. That's what I do.

I avoided the newer "integrated" type straps because I prefer to be able to replace the band if it wears out but now that you've posted this thread, I guess there's another reason and that's to be able to "switch off" the strap by unclipping.
  • I have an garmin hrm 3 strap. You sure unbutton is a way to turn it completely off?

    edit:
even when unbottoned the strap can be found by the watch. So that's not working for me unfortunately.
  • The strap is not switched on by motion but by electrical connection across the contact points.

When you say found do you mean it's listed under sensors and it's searching or is it still connecting? Once a sensor is paired, it will stay on the watch until you remove that sensor. If it's just searching for that sensor, this is normal.
  • No i mean that when I start an activity I get an notification external sensor found and then the internal hrm stops. Even when the strap is folded is my bag.

but I will try to completely unbutton and separate the strap and unit.

I'm not sure what you have going on or why. In order for the 935 to connect to your HRM 3 the strap needs to receive an electrical signal from a heart beat and be in range of your watch. Are you able to test with a different strap to eliminate which is causing this?
  • Sometimes my HRM1-G (older type of Garmin HRM) stays connected when it is wet or lying around in a damp shower room. Thoroughly toweling it off will make it stop transmitting. Temporarily storing it in a metal box, walking away >5 meters from it, or roling it in a wet towel (that dampens the signal) also works.
  • I tried to completely remove the sensor from the strap.
That seems to work pretty good.

It doesn’t need the electrical connection, just moisture. I always soak mine in water before putting it on. As soon as it is wet, and still in the sink, my devices will connect to it. The only way I’ve found to disconnect after exercise is by removing the sensor module.
