Do outside activities (i.e., TrainerRoad) effect FirstBeat training metrics?

As the topic says, if I do a workout in TrainerRoad or something similar, and have that activity imported into Garmin Connect, does it impact my training metrics (e.g., "training status", "training load," etc.)?

dtaylor526 I'm not familiar with TrainerRoad. I use TrainAsONE and it does impact my training status and load. I download my individually designed workout, but it's recorded using the native run app. That may be the difference.
  • you'll have to record it with your garmin 935/ fenix 5 / edge 1030 as well, otherwise it won't count; for example i'm uploading zwift activities to garmin connect, but also record & save the same activity with the 935 so that the other parameters (training load, vo2max, whatever) are updated; once uploaded, I just delete this activity from connect

    That is really unfortunate.

I often want to use something other than my 935 for various reasons. For example, my power meter often drops from my 935 when I'm on a trainer, so I prefer using the TrainerRoad or CompuTrainer files. I also want to avoid having to go in and clean out repeated activities from TrainingPeaks and Connect.

Can anyone from FirstBeat chime in whether this is a feature they will look to provide in the future? It seems like so long as the third-party provides a TSS and HR data , they should be able to make it all match.
  • The thing is that FirstBeat software runs on devices, not in Garmin Connect. If your activity does not "pass" through your device, then firstbeat's software has no means of calculating anything.

I recently started using the "ErgData" smartphone app with a Concept2 Rower (PM5 control panel) and have noticed this behavior - the data (.FIT file?) syncs with Garmin Connect but "Training Load" doesn't update based on that. (despite having an HR sensor connected to the rower)

I get why Garmin does this - they want to sell devices and maintain data integrity which they can only do if logged activity is "within the Garmin eco-system".

I'd only been using "ErgData" because it passes accurate data about wattage, stroke length etc directly from the rower and the 935 is limited in the data it collects. (given the native app doesn't talk to the rower - I won't use 3rd party ConnectIQ apps like ErgIQ as I find them horrendously buggy)

I wonder what would happen if I tried logging using both the 935 and ErgData - would it create a duplicate entry in my Connect account, merge the data, or discard one of the activities as redundant? I should give this a test run next time I'm rowing.

based on what I've seen with bike trainers, it will create a duplicate entry. I haven't diven into this too much, but that will likely also effect your weekly tss score .
  • What does affect FirstBeat training metrics?
I did a pool swim class without HRM-Swim. Training effect: zero!
    700m
    Time: 45:10
    Swim Time:23:47

Ok, HR is what measures the effort, but it would be good if there was some other metric perhaps based on recent similar workouts.

Outdoor Running and Outdoor Cycling, I think, are the only two that affect Training Status. ("Productive, Unproductive, Peaking" etc) It's my understanding the reason for this is both cycling and running are well-studied and best understood as to how speed and heart-rate correlate to physiological metrics. Not so with other types of activity.

*Other* metrics (e.g. training load) are affected by other activities like walking, SUP Boarding etc. Even my indoor rowing sessions where I was using the 935 and a chest-strap to log generated "Training Effect" data.
  • Training status just doesn't work. I would ignore it. I once compared training status to training peaks, golden cheetah, and strava. TP, GC, and Strava were all nearly the same after a month....training status wasn't even close. It doesn't like any workouts on the treadmill, swims, etc. Garmin needs to get rid of it and come up with their own system.
