Racing a Previous Activity freeze completely the watch (Full reset mandatory)

When I perform the "run trail" and I use the feature "Race an Activity" in the training menu my watch freeze on the last data screen used.
It seems not always at the same time (last time it was less than 20min, first time with a shorter course near 50min).

After impossible to reboot the device. The device stays with the blue triangle (after standard reset with the light button) and of course no possibility to see the file in the watch via USB.
So it is mandatory to do the full reset (the one not in the manual with the "light" and the "start" & "back" button)

I'm using the version 9.70 and last time the beta 9.75
I have only one specific "Data Fields", it is the "Combo Running Power" of GarminLabs and the only other specific setting is "GPS and Galileo"

Can you confirm me that you don't have the problem? to know if it is a hardware problem of my watch or “only” software bug ?

I have also see a small bug with this "Racing a Previous Activity", the "Elevation profile" cannot be display.
The other navigation screens is working well (including if you do some change on it).
No need to start the activity to see the problem ;-)
P.S: If you start first a navigation, you will see the "Elevation profile" and this screen is kept if you start "Race an Activity".
But it is not corresponding to the race (but to the navigation course except if it it the same)

I had similar freeze issue: I was following an older activity (trail run -> navigation -> Activities -> older mountain biking activity). Was able to follow the course ~half way when I noticed that the navigation/map screen was not updating anymore.. the whole watch was frozen. Couldnt change screens but i was able to start a reboot. It didnt get pass the "blue triangle" tho so i had to complete my course without recording the activity. However one funny thing happened at some point during the rest of the activity: the watch was still showing that "blue triangle" reboot logo but it peeped and showed a notification "On course"! :D It did that only once.

I had to perform hard reset at home which solved the issue of not getting pass the blue triangle. After that i havent tried navigating an old activity (fearing it might do the freezing thing again) but i have used courses (gpx files uploaded from basecamp) many times after that incident and they have been working without any issues.

Same situation...doing long trail running course, watch began to be slower and finally frozen...impossible to recover, but gps recording was working because when finish course, the device passed to be ready and can stop my activity...after analyze it I saw that gps recording was perfect...
  • I am glad to see I am not the only one experiencig this, but does anyone have a solution?
  • I think only Garmin will be able to provide a real solution
  • Same problem here! In my opinion the bug is related to the navigation ... in fact, in my case, the device freeze following tracks previously loaded in .gpx format.
    Also take a look here : https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-935-aa/1395334-severe-crashes-freezes-when-using-race-an-activity-or-using-a-previous-run-as-a-map

And the same here - just to say this is a pretty serious bug.
Not related to a downloaded course either - this happened to me using a course I'd recorded previously.

First time, it slowed, froze then a soft reset all was fine.

Second time, slowed. Then froze. Then only a hard reset, losing all settings sorted it out.

Literally don't touch this function; it'll brick your watch.

  • For users who are seeing this issue occur, are you racing an activity that was recorded on the same watch? If not, was this something was brought over with physio trueup or perhaps manually loaded onto the device with a .fit file. More information will help us resolve this.
  • When it happened, I was racing (running, using the Trail application) an activity that I had done a few days earlier, walking.
  • Me several time with activities send from connect to the watch.
  • Has this been addressed yet? I’m loathed to try it to find out in case I have to factory reset my watch.
