Garmin Running Power und TrainingPeaks TSS

I have a Garmin Forerunner 935 since December 2017 and linked my Garmin Connect and TrainingPeaks accounts so that my runs are automatically synced to TrainingPeaks.

TrainingPeaks used to ignore the Running Power data from the FR 935 with HRM Run chest strap until recently. Since July 1st 2018 Running Power is now displayed on used on TrainingPeaks. Unfortunately they also use Running Power instead of Pace now to calculate TSS (Training Stress Store) now and there is no way to change this, short of not recording Running Power on the watch at all. TrainingPeaks Support could not tell me what changed on July 1st 2018 to make syncing of Running Power possible.

I am just curious whether anybody else experienced this change as well, and whether I am the only one who wants to record Running Power data but does not trust it enough (yet) to calculate TSS based on it.

P.S. You can manually change each workout from power based TSS back to pace based TSS on the TrainingPeaks web app, but not on the mobile app and I find this way to tedious, so I decided to not use TrainingPeaks anymore.

Training Peaks already works with Stryd as do some other sites so I believe Garmin simply changed the Connect IQ id to match that of Stryd so these would automatically pick up Garmin Running power. There was a notion of adding support to 3rd party sites in one of their Running Power app updates, but they never included the specifics how this was done so this is my own guess.

I trust TSS with Stryd enough to use it, but never got to try Garmin Running Power past initial testing to define zones or threshold power which is basically needed to use it for TSS.

Would be interesting to know if there is someone who is already using Garmin Running Power with Training Peaks?
  • It has been taking running power in for a lot longer than since July 1st. I had to finally delete the running power fields so that it would stop uploading the data. My issue was that it was using my "Power" numbers from my cycling power meter and comparing the running power numbers to those power zones. I could never figure out how to set running power zones separate from my cycling power zones. Since my running power numbers would be in the 400-700W range usually for extended periods of time and my cycling FTP is 260W I would get crazy TSS numbers of like 400 for a 1.5 hour run.

You can open up each individual activity and select what value is used to generate the TSS score in training peaks as a workaround. Just click the down arrow next to "TSS" and select a different way of calculating. I believe you can set a default as well in settings.

Simply configure running power zones or at least running power threshold in TP settings.

I think if I remember correctly I first tried adding running power as default power and cycling under cycling power but that did't work as default power was also copied to cycling activities. Only after I set separate power for running did it work like in the picture above. You can also add cycling power separately but if you do both activities then it's probably better to set cycling as your default power and add running after that. The foundation of power based training was found first in cycling after all so I think the logic in Training Peaks works based on this assumption... Might also be a bug.
  • This won't help you for Training Peaks but I know SportTracks has separate threshold power zones for running and cycling, and you can tell it to ignore the power sensor data for calculating the TSS score once in your default profile settings then it uses HR or pace. So I don't know if that is also in TP but you might check but SportTracks has had run power support for a long long time.

What I like about TP though is that once you setup your running profile with correct treshold power you can simply dial in different TSS's for future workouts in calendar and see the projected progress before you do your workouts. This has been super helpful in summer when I've been on vacation to not drop behind too much in my fitness. That actually happened last summer when I was using simply SportTracks and Garmins training load to monitor my progress. I simply had no idea how much I had to work out to keep up.

Not to say both tools haven't been helpful and I actually still have a running subscription of STmobi and bought the desktop app too. I also appreciate you finally added the full Stryd metrics in analyze section.

@ runprog, I was recently notified that peaksware is starting development to allow changing TSS/rTSS/hrTSS from the mobile app. https://tinyurl.com/y9qlmgqr

My experience, I noticed that Training Peaks starting importing Garmin Running Power day one when I added the field to my watch (Jan 2018). Like you, I decided initially that I did not want to change my training from rTSS (pace) to TSS (power) but for me it was due to being mid marathon training cycle. Since March I have been planning my workouts with TSS. I find that it really helps me balance the bad weather days when I do a Zwift ride instead of run or as mentioned before those vacation / busy work weeks when schedules get changed all around. As long as I'm comparing Garmin Run Power to Garmin Run Power, it's useful for me.

How do you get your running power threshold?

How do you get your running power threshold?

You can find the answer by doing a quick search (http://bfy.tw/KNxy)... or on the TrainingPeaks website (https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/running-with-power-how-to-find-your-run-ftp/).

Warm up for 15 minutes, preparing for hard effort at the end of it
Conduct a 3 minute interval at maximal effort
Recover with 5 minute walk, 10 minute easy jog, 5 minute walk, and 5 minute easy jog, and 5 minute walk again, (30 minutes total)
Conduct a 9 minute interval at maximal effort
Cool down 10 to 15 minutes easy

After you have completed this test, take the average power for the 3 minutes and the 9 minutes, and average the two values. For example, if you did 350 watts for the 3 minutes, and 300 for the 9 minutes, you would get a 325 average of the two.
