Garmin Coach

According to this blog post, Garmin Coach is released: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/fitness/garmin-coach/

The Garmin Coach widget that appeared in a previous beta is no longer on the watch, presumably we can expect a new release or beta soon. It is a nice feature, but I am little underwhelmed to see that there is only a 5k option. Hopefully they'll add more plans.
  • From what I understand it's available from Garmin Connect right (or the connect mobile app), check:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlGln5iDqFc

I have it in the mobile app (but indeed only 5k and fastest training program you can select is 25 minutes 5k which is eh.... not quite what I'm looking for). So unless you're an absolute beginner it's not helpful atm imo.
  • I am not a beginner but am heading towards 60. A 25 minute 5K is acceptable to me but was hoping for other distances.

    Thanks for the youtube link.
  • FlipStone - I'm with you. Hopefully they will expand this to include quicker times (current PB just a sniff over 19), and other distances.

Sorry about that, didn't mean to sound insulting/degrading... Everyone has different goals and limits of course, whether by age or other reasons.

By the way, on the connect website there are training plans for other distances as well. Perhaps you can find something there?

Same here, pb is 18:30 (though I'd run faster at the moment I think) so would like to see more in those areas (as well as other distances, 10k/HM). But I guess they assume that once you run faster you should probably know what you're doing anyway, or have some other club/trainer (none of that the case for me ;) )
  • The draw here is the adaptive nature of the plan. Hopefully they will integrate that into some other distance and target speeds. I've been using TrainAsOne for the same purpose. I'm not totally sold on their AI's approach, but having adaptive structured workouts is very appealing to me.

No worries, didn't take it as such. As nmyeti says, it's the adaptive element that's attractive. Hope they can add more distances/targets.

  • If somehow they can integrate daily HRV stress and recovery time into the way this plan adapts to you, i'd really be interested.
  • I cant seem to find this Garmin coach, thought it would be under Training/Training plans?

On GCM it's under Training, and in GC it's under Training Plans, however, as was mentioned, you have to search for a 5K plan to have it show up in GC.

I think the whole feature is pretty pointless seeing that there already are plenty of plans from 5k to Marathon in GC for different levels. Also, the time goals are kinda underwhelming, and don't make sense. If you "run regularly" which is the highest level to choose from (and by regularly coaches usually mean an injury-free history of at least 2 years of running), your 5k time is well below 25' anyway, so no need for a "plan" there anymore.

They won't. Those coaches promoted in the feature offer diverse plans on their sides which make quite a bit of money, and to me it looks like Garmin just bought plans there in bulk, but they wouldn't let them buy faster than 5min/km (not to mention the publicity they get from Garmin's Connect platform, leading many users to buy a proper plan). With their selling all plans to Garmin they would cut into their sales from pretty much every Garmin user, who'd get 5k plans for free with the purchase of a compatible Garmin watch. Maybe Garmin will bulk buy 10k, half, and marathon plans there in the future as well but I wouldn't hold my breath that you'll get a sub-3-marathon plan for free that way. ;)

That's a lot dismissive of runners who do not run 5k below 25' irregardless of how long they've been running. As I see it these, plans are a great way for people who perhaps do not run regularly, perhaps starting out, perhaps recovering from injury, perhaps wanting to increase their pace to run below 25'. There are perhaps many people out there who do run regularly but do not know how to get there 5k pace down below 25mins. These plans are a start point.

It seems to me, that the people dismissing these plans are looking for a free service to take the place of a paid coach. Nothing wrong with that, we all like free stuff. But remember, many coaches have invested time and money developing a skill set that you either value or you don't. I know from experience that many people do not. There are services out there that already provide adaptive plans. You just have to be prepared to pay for them. It would appear that a number of 'expert' runners are not.
