Thoughts about Galileo

Just thought I'd start another thread about Galileo seeing as there are so many and people seem to be wanting their own. Can't have enough of them eh? And this one is different from all the other because it's asking for your thoughts. No need to provide any proof. Just say what you think.

I don't think I have noticed any difference.
  • Worse for me....first image GPS+ Glonass, Second GPS+ Galilo.... a lot of high-rises nearby...

+1. Maybe this Galileo-thing was just a prank from Garmin and the setting changes nothing at all.

My thoughts exactly. This is just another new fancy buzzword that most of the people have heard about and so some very eager sales person/manager said: we need this to get bigger sales numbers!

Did not notice any difference. Am in europe, no high rises near me.

If it just drains the battery more over a reasonable distance then I don't see much benefit tbh.
  • There are currently only 14 Galileo satellites in service, 2 in testing, and 4 going through commissioning so right now there’s probably not going to be much help from the system.

We’ll have to see how it pans out in the future, but Garmin probably felt they needed to add the capability once it went into IOC and people were talking about how the chip in their watch was capable.
  • my track is much better. With GPS I can only work out which side of the road I am on, now I can work out with paving slab I am walking on. Still I'm hoping for Galileo 2 so I can work out if I am stepping on the cracks or not.

I haven't really seen any difference, but I will go back to GPS+GLONASS for the time being and try again once Galileo has more Active satellites.
  • It seems to me Garmin just wanted this for their marketing material. The hardware supports it so why not enable it. The fact that it is of little practical use until there is a full constellation of satellites won't bother the salespeople too much.

I think we are overlooked up here in the Antipodes for both GLONASS and Galileo. Still, at least with GPS I can tell whether I am in Australia or New Zealand. I had hoped Galileo would help me narrow it down a bit more, ie which Australian state, whether I was on the North or South Island.

Guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer.

I guess the hype is mostly user / press generated as the Galileo has some new technological advancements but no one bothered to explain what it means for current generation of devices is just extra satellites with probably slightly higher error resistance yet the limited availability kind of limits even this slight advantage for most of the time.
