935 Galileo Difference

New thread to discuss performance difference with GPS + Galileo as compared with other options (GPS or GPS+GLONASS).

One run for me on road on usual route in Southeastern US, GPS + Galileo, and no perceived difference in elevation, track accuracy, distance or pace. Perhaps a little quicker to lock satellites before activity start but only perception. Really hadn't noticed a difference between GPS and GPS + GLONASS either, prior to update.

  • I've had amazing tracks with my 5x using Galileo and some real lousy ones. Part of this is that there are probably still some gaps in the satellite coverage. I was in Seattle the end of last week and had a run out in the Redmond area. I expected the track to be horrible as there was pretty heavy tree cover and a high bank on one side of the path i was running. When I got back to the hotel and reviewed the track it was one of the best I've ever seen from my 5x. Until Galileo is fully operational, I think we are going to see some highly variable results.

As we do with GPS only...

One thing that I want to throw out there is that I've noted since upgrading to 9.60 and subsequently 9.70 and GPS 2.20 is that my regular GPS only tracks on 1 second recording look a lot rougher then when on 9.10 and 8.0. I'm getting a lot of zig zags especially on out and backs and squiggly lines in general making the tracks look noisy, though I can't say for sure that the overall distance is being affected as they seem similar to before so not the end of the world. I've noted this as well when looking at my friends 935 tracks since the firmware upgrade. I tried a soft reset but no avail.

Frustrating as everything was working perfectly on 9.10 and 8.0 and for the price of the watch and this far into it's cycle, we shouldn't have to deal with issues such as these.

  • GPS+Galileo? Have you tried with GPS only?
Have you checked the setting? Have you checked right through the file to be certain that the recording is at 1 Hz? The Garmin always measures at 1Hz, smart recording just keeps the data if it is not changed. Post a link to an example.
Here's an activity from the weekend -trail run in the bush, GPS+Galileo. No apparent problems. And the switchbacks, are switchbacks!

Hey Phil, it’s been on gps only with 1 second recording. I tried GPS + Galileo right after the firmware update and wasn’t happy with the tracks so reverted back but they still aren’t looking as good as before. Outside of that I haven’t changed any settings and when I look at my last run before the 9.6 update and the ones after I can spot the difference right away. It seems as though the watch gps is far more sensitive and can’t go in straight line like before. On out and backs if I run on opposite sides of wide path before it would show me on each side and now it zig zags over itself for example. I’ve been testing it against my old 225 recently which is showing cleaner tracks. Maybe it’s just my watch but it was working beautifully before 9.6.

I’ve done a hard reset, soaked the watch in clear skies for 20 mins along with recorded a blank track just to make sure and still same issue. This is for road running and the weather has been super clear the last couple weeks in my area (Vancouver, Canada). I’ll post a couple tracks when I get home to compare the difference.
  • Matty, I posted a couple of runs a couple of weeks back that were done on successive days. One was great the other one was a bit vague to say the least. But apart from that one run, my tracks have been fine. Pace was around 6min/km mostly on trails with a reasonable amount of overhead cover. Of interest are the beginning and end on both runs.
    Here's the runs 7th July and8th July
No idea what caused the difference, but it's been good ever since. I'm on 1sec recording and GPS+Galileo with the latest public release firmware whatever that is!

Yes, I can confirm that tracks are more wobbling since 9.70. I have the same problem at my last three runs. I'm using GPS only and smart recording.
  • I might be Captain Obvious here, and someone else might also have noticed this, but the issue seems to be with the new GPS 2.20 FW, not with the main 9.60, 9.70 & 9.72 - at least when it comes to track reliability and open water swimming accuracy.
Has anybody tried _not_ upgrading GPS while using any of the newer main releases?

same for me, looked better with previous firmware. (don't know, if it's related to 9.6/9.7 or the GPS-update to 2.20)
    i'm using GPS only with 1sec Recording-Interval.

It is good suggestion indeed. Maybe there is a way to downgrade to GPS 4.40 only.
