FTP not updating

I have reset the FTP value and made sure that the option to auto detect is on. I made several rides with 1 hour average W above the default 183 watts. I've done 4 hour steady state (200 W) and multiple 5 min threshold with short rest workouts. I'm wearing a HR strap. It should be around 270-280 watts.

But it won't update... Any clues?
  • I'm not sure what does and doesn't trigger it, I've had rides it has given me an update, then very similiar rides where it hasn't. Interested to see what others say,

Just to be sure, you have >Settings > Physiological Metrics > Auto Detection > FTP > on

Yup, it's on. VO2 and run threshold updates just fine, but not FTP.
  • Try the FTP Guided Test - it uses the same autodetection algorithms, but the workout should generate enough data at the right ranges (slightly below and slightly above FTP) to generate an FTP.

Also, when it detects a new FTP, when you go to end your workout and save it, it should prompt you as to whether to accept or decline your new FTP - it can be easy to rush through this step when saving if you aren't expecting it.

The point of having the auto detect for me is to not having to do a regular test. It hurts too much! ;P

Yes, I get that with the run threshold but never seen it for the FTP.
  • Finding your threshold is never painless, but certainly Garmin's Guided Test hurts less than the more conventional 20 minutes @ 105% test. :p It takes you up in 20W increments every 2 minutes until it finds threshold - so the time above threshold is only a few minutes.

Autodetection works by finding the change in heart rate variability typically associated with threshold. The steady state workouts you describe above the very low default data point are unlikely to provide enough data for this HRV method.
  • FTP auto detection work fine, but fail to upload to GC. Same problem with my edge 820. there are many users report about this problem
  • Are you wearing a chest strap HRM? What power meter are you using? I wear an HRM-Tri and am using the Vector 3's. I had a new threshold detected just last week during an event, but it did not show in connect. I thought I had imagined it until I just saw this post...lol.

I had to power meters, Rotor Flow Power and the other is Stages, different bikes, different power meters, different GPS, but the result is always the same. The values don´t go to GC.
  • Finally! Today I did a 4x10 min threshold workout with 1 min Z2 rest and got the FTP updated!
