Data fields versus data pages

I have customised my running activities so that I only have info. that is relevant to me available when running. That is not to say that other info. is not relevant or of interest to me after my run. Reading some other posts here and I have a concern that by removing the running dynamics pages from the activity they might not be tracked. I don't think this is true, i.e. if I run with watch and HRM-Tri I get dynamics data in the activity even without pages, but would like to confirm. Would also like to understand what defines what is captured in the fit file. Do I have any control over captured data, and if so how/where?

To illustrate with an example. I am very interested in the running dynamics data, e.g. cadence, ground contact time, however at the moment I have little interest in seeing this info. on the watch while running. When running I am more interested in heart rate, split/lap time, distance and the training partner times. I have thus removed superfluous data pages from the activity so that I only change between HR, laps and the shadow. Is everything else still being recorded, and how can I influence what is and isn't recorded?

I ask because I was curious about the running power stuff that comes from the connect store. Again, I might want to analyse this post-run, but not during.

Thanks.
  • Running dynamics data should be recorded even if you remove the relevant data pages. Generally, you have little control over what's written to the fit file. An exception could be IQ data fields. Some Connect IQ data fields write data to the fit file. If they are not included in one of your data pages, then they're not running and not writing data to the fit file.
  • Thanks. That makes sense re. the Connect IQ fields versus built-in fields. That answers my question.
  • All the stock stuff, including basic running dynamics, should be recorded no matter how you have your data pages/fields configured. But there are definitely data fields that add their own data to the fit file. Run Scribe and Stryd are examples of this where they will add data from their foot pods only if you have the related data field on at least one page. The data field doesn't actually have to be visible on the page, but it has to be set to one of the pages in the activity. Another example would be the Garmin Power CIQ field that also adds data to the fit file.
