I'm getting a new FR935 to replace a defective one. Is it possible to have my historical data such as VO2 max, resting heart rate, activity history, personal records, etc. transferred to my new watch? Can I just copy/paste all the .FIT files from the various folders in the old watch to the new watch? Any other tricks or suggestions to make the transition more seamless?
Copy to NEWFILES/ – Locations: copy contents of LOCATIONS/ to NEWFILES – Despite what the page says, totals apparently can’t be restored – Custom activities/activity settings: copy contents of SPORTS/ to NEWFILES) (This can result in your activity list looking a little funny if you had any custom activities – might have to reorder activities until the list looks right again.) – Records: copy contents of RECORDS/ to NEWFILES) – Some settings: copy contents of SETTINGS/ to NEWFILES) (Most settings, like wifi networks, and bluetooth pairings, will not be preserved.)
Copy to original location: – Activity history (copy ACTIVITY/) – Connect IQ Apps and app settings (copy APPS/) – Courses (copy COURSES/) – Segments (copy SEGMENTS and SEG_LIST)
It looks like I will be sending my 935 back for a replacement due to sticky buttons. The VO2 is obviously synced to the Garmin app - is there no way to sync this back to the new watch ? Will the data in the app just be wiped by the first sync from the new watch ? I know its only a guide, but my VO2 is looking good at the moment due to some focused interval work - I dont really want to lose it if it can be prevented....
No, the training status, VO2, and some other metrics are calculated by the device right after the workout is complete and does not sync between devices. There is currently no way to save or transfer metrics between devices. They are supposedly working on adding that function throughout the device ecosystem, since this is probably one of the most complained about and requested features there is. It's also pretty complicated to implement correctly, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see if we ever get it.
I have always found this transition to be cumbersome to say the least.
Hopefully at some point our data will truly be cloud-based and backed-up so in the case our watches die (or upgraded) we could buy another one, sync, and BOOM all our settings (screens, VO2max etc) will be there.
Phil - I disagree! I'll become instantly detrained and get fat over night. My parkrun time will head over 30 mins, and I'll struggle to hit 5 hours on my next marathon.. all because I cant backup my watch! ;) Point taken - but it does impact things like training load and recovery advisor. These are tools that need longer term data to work, and its a shame I'll have to start from scratch with them once I get a replacement watch.
But still, it only take a little while for things to recover. I do confess to not worrying too much about things like training load and recovery advisor as I am more focussed on my training metrics than the estimates of training load and recovery time.
Of course if these numbers are the be all and end all of your training then it is important and I can understand the impatience.
Does anyone know if the above instructions for moving data to a new device works between a South East Asia firmware to a Rest of World watch? I am getting mine swapped out and would like to keep as much of my old data as possible.

To be honest, I would start with the new watch from scratch, without copying anything! If you're keen with personal records on your watch you might consider copy these. But they are stored in GC anyway so I wouldn't mind if new device claims a new record in early days. With Physio TrueUp all the "vital" settings will be kept/transferred, even I haven't tested APAC->ROW. For me possible side effects with some settings different between fw version are a "don't try this at home". Widgets/Apps/Watchfaces etc. are easy to install. Additional Sports or individual sport settings are a bit "time consuming" to configure but I think it's the best option. Just my two cent...
