Training status "No status" while biking?

I am currently recovering from running related injury and only ride (used to run and ride).
Not ising a power meter.
Training Status has been showing the following for the past last of months:
1. No Status.
2. Fitness shows "--".
Does the VO2 max shown get updated and is there any way to track biking efficiency through Garmin, the same as running, without the use of a power meter?
  • No, there are too many variables of road surface, wind speed and direction, slight changes of gradient, drag co-efficient of the bike, etc to calculate cycling VO2Max without a PM.

PM prices are definitely coming down, but they are still not what could be called cheap.
  • I have a PM and I also see Performance Status as "----" for very long periods. Sometimes the whole workout. I've been indoors with Vector pedals and a chest HRM. I think it's a software issue.
  • So, essentially, when one runs and bikes one's trainng status regarding fitness only relates to running...
    Thanks !
  • There is a correlation, but only running is measured and reported by Garmin. And since the metabolic cost of running is generally higher than swimming or cycling, that's the most important one to track.

I swim, bike and run. I know that the limiter in the water and on the bike is not my VO2max, it's my ability to produce power in the water and on the bike. Both of which are a function of my muscular and efficiency of movement in the water and on the bike - which is sadly lacking at the moment.

I believe you need an indoor bike that also shows speed / distance along with power. There aren't too many of those at the moment unless you use a more advanced trainer or something like wattbike atom (where available).

I'm currently using a Kettler Racer Ergo myself with http://ergo.ub-online.de/index.php/de/ and I'm getting training status and load along with VO2max.

I would still advice getting something like Training Peaks subscription for more advanced training load monitoring supporting multi sport power data and TSS. The Garmin implementation seems quite limited after using it for awhile.
  • TP does offer a nice estimation of workout efficiency but...if I thought I could avoid buying a power meter I have to stand corrected.
Pulse becomes less accurate, regarding training efficiency, during a prolonged training session and there are simply far too many factors that come into effect.

Pulse with optical HR maybe, but not with a chest strap generally.

Just found it in the manual, referenced under Tips for Getting Your Training Status:

To get the most out of the training status feature, you can try these tips.
    • Run outdoors with heart rate at least two times per week, or ride with heart rate and power at least two times per week.

After using the device for one week, your training status should be available.
So yes would seem you also need a power meter. On other hand I've got training status even for my indoor cardio workout just tracking time and HR, so I guess it depends on activity.

Training peaks for example still allows to use hrTSS for training load calculation, but it comes with a disclaimer that it's not as accurate as power especially for interval training.

BTW, related on topic, I also got an running injury a couple of months back that was caused by overuse. Uploading my pasth month runs to TP with Stryd power meter data there was a clear trend shown where my fitness was raising but at the same time my form was continuously dropping with not enough recovery. Both Sporttracks.mobi health status and Garmins training load gauge failed to notice this. Showing that I was still in green and good to go while this happened.
  • JTH9,

Once you have a couple of VO2Max data points and a training status, it only needs a new one every couple of weeks to maintain a training status. The watch uses that VO2Max figure to calibrate non-running/power meter efforts, such as indoor cardio, to still give you recovery and training load information.
  • Pulse with optical HR maybe, but not with a chest strap generally.

    Physiologically incorrect.
While chest strap does measure HR accurately HR itself, during prolonged activity, starts to behave physiologically in a manner that does not correlate to the amount of physical effort in the same exact correclation as relatively short activities (cardiac drift and more...).
