935 owners - how are you finding GPS?

On the verge of swapping out my Fenix 5 for a FR935 mostly due to GPS accuracy. My issues could be somewhat rectified with a footpod but no good if I'm constantly changing pace and stride types for intervals.

Please can you let me know if the GPS seems mostly accurate - I'm especially keen to hear from those who have come from a F5 too.

Thanks,
  • What were the intervals you were doing? Must say I really don't look at my watch during intervals. Normally I think (if it's an 800m interval), I can hold *this* pace for 800m (and this is defined by my perceived effort). I've tried using pace boundary alarms but really if I am going slower that the speed I am meant to go I have very little chance of picking it up. If I do risk an occasional glance at my watch then lap pace does for me.

I guess on shorter intervals it gets harder, but I don't do anything less than a 1min normally. Last night was a pyramid 1/3/5/7/5/3/1 mins with 90s jog recoveries. I was meant to be at 5K pace (3:45/km is PB pace) and I managed 3:36-3:52/km without looking at the watch.

  • I was doing 8 x 1min at 1mile pace with 2min recovery. Sometimes I'll do a 30sec uphill sprint with downhill recovery.

I agree that with experience you basically know what pace you are running without any device at all. That is why I believe lap-average GPS pace is fine for a lot of runners...because they aren't really using the watch to pace themselves at all, but rather going by feel.

I have followed programs that might have me running at a pace I don't normally do, so in that instance it is nice to have an accurate instant pace read on the watch.

On another note, I recently had an instance where the GPS on the 935 decided not to turn on at all for the first 5 minutes of my run. I never even knew about it until I uploaded the run, because my pace and distance were being recorded via Stryd. That's another scenario that makes me appreciate the foot pod.

I've been using the 935 for over a month now(about 20 runs). I am very pleased with accuracy of distance. i run the same route most of the time and it is dead on when i view on map. Current pace is ok too.
  • GPS is great, elevation is a load of rubbish.

How odd. That is exactly what I have on my schedule for today, but the 1 minute intervals are at a zone 4 power instead of being pace based. (Fitzgerald 80/20 Power Based Marathon training plan.)

  • Not odd! I am using the 80/20 plan as well, but pace-based
  • Actually there are a few places where the GPS signal was lost. Do you have auto pause on? If you do a lot of trail running it's probably best to leave it off. If you do have it turned off then you might have a problem with the GPS on the watch. In which case you should have a chat with Garmin Support.

Great run by the way :-)

Thanks philipshambrook for the response and the kind words. I thought you may be onto something as I took a little more time to enjoy the scenery and catch my breath over the last 10 miles. I reviewed the Trail Run settings and auto pause was not enable. Additionally, Auto Climb, 3D distance and speed are turned off, as I am not entirely sure what they do. Tracking was set to GPS and Glonass. I will certainly be keeping tabs on the accuracy as I ramp back up for the next event. Thank you.
  • Might be best then to have a chat with Garmin Support then. I do most of my training running single-track under tree cover and can’t remember the last time I had a problem with the 935, if ever.
  • Guys, take a look at this post, please: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-935-aa/1351925-new-forerunner-935-has-a-huge-gps-mistakes

I'm quite disappointed that I have so huge GPS mistakes at the moment for a brand new device with the latest software update. No other programs are installed. Do you have any clue of why this is happening?
