935 owners - how are you finding GPS?

On the verge of swapping out my Fenix 5 for a FR935 mostly due to GPS accuracy. My issues could be somewhat rectified with a footpod but no good if I'm constantly changing pace and stride types for intervals.

Please can you let me know if the GPS seems mostly accurate - I'm especially keen to hear from those who have come from a F5 too.

Thanks,
  • I've had my 935 since the day it came out last year. I run primarily on a rail trail that has markers every 1/4 mile. My GPS is always completely accurate within a couple of feet of those markers. And this is in the woods under heavy tree cover. So yes, I find the GPS to be absolutely accurate from my personal experience.

It is excellent in town and under heavy tree cover. I’ve lost some distance on trails that twist and turn a lot. I’m talking almost on top of itself. But still better than my previous Garmin.
  • If you need accurate and instantaneous pace information for interval work GPS is never going to be the answer. It gives noisy data due to the nature of the system and on Garmin watches only provides pace information to the nearest 5 seconds per km (or even worse per mile if you use miles). The 935 is possibly slightly better than the F5 when it comes to GPS, but if you specifically want instantaneous pace information you're going to be just as disappointed with the 935 as you are with the F5
  • Yea, I agree with the instant pace. I do use a foot pod to show my current pace while I am running. But my distance is spot on.
  • Yes to all of the above! It works well under all the conditions under which I use it. Although, on the occasion I do run through town I have noticed the GPS to be a little less 'straight' then when out in the bush

As for instant pace? There's an element of averaging going on, around 5s I'd guess, to the pace displayed can lag a bit. However, overall it does well enough for me.
  • I don't need it to be super accurate and appreciate GPS won't be perfect but just want it to be more stable than the F5. Mine loses signal quite a bit around the thinnest of tree cover compared to my Vivoactive HR which is a fraction of the price. Some theories are around the metal bezal causing interference, not sure, but it's been noted by many

What are you using for distance - the footpod or GPS?
  • I went from the F5 to the FR935 in June and never looked back. Compared to my old FR235 I just couldn't stand the irregular laps anymore with the unexplained +/- 5 to 10 second variations, unacceptable for serious training.
  • I bought one of the first FR935 in April and it had a horrible GPS accuracy. Around 5-10% offset compared to the real distance on a 10k run for example. After several updates and hardware resets, Garmin exchanged it last summer. The new FR935 I got works perfect! Just when it is very cloudy/stormy AND I run under trees in that condition, the accuracy drops ...
