Serious issues with barometric and altimeter: Defective?

Hello everybody

In recent times I noted the following issue.

Each time I run, after about 2.5 km, I stop for about 5 minutes for a little stretching. When I start back, and the temperature rose of about 1 degree Celsius, I noticed a drop in the elevation field. Only in recent time I noticed that the drop is increased up to over 20 meters! I’ve checked previous runs with previous FW and actually the issue was the same just I did not notice it so much since it was just a drop minor than 10 meters.

Here below the examples, all done having the option for automatic calibration on

FW 6.10: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2334416096

FW 7.0: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2379226163

today with FW 7.10: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2439885299

Following the advice on some running forum i did the following test setting on a sport mode without gps (so no automatic calibration)

935 inside home on the wrist the following was measured

Atmosphere: 993,4
Barometer: 1002
Temperature: 31 c°
Height (Altitude): 77 meters

935 outside home not on the wrist and after 15 minutes I red the following

Atmosphere: 991,6
Barometer: 1002
Temperature: 14.5 c°
Height (Altitude): 86 meters

Does this prove a defectiveness or is it something related to FW and that can be solved?

Thanks for the support

Amil
  • I also just remembered my barometer holes were covered by a silver tab which came off during a hot spell. I wonder if this then allows dirt into the sensor? Do others still have a silver piece of “paper” to the lhs of the hr sensor??
  • Never seen anything like that as far as I can recall on mine. Might have been something there when it came out of the box. However, I just pulled everything off without taking much notice. I would suggest that with the hole covered barometric pressure readings would be compromised.
  • I had a Fenix 5 with the same exact issue and i returned it. I now have a 935 and i do not have the problem (yet)
I had a watchface installed and this can cause the issue as some Fenix owners removed those watchfaces and the problems went away

Replacement has arrived, I was right, but looks like they changed the sticker. My origional that has issues had a silver sticker that came off whilst on holiday in very warm conditions....

I'm not sure what that is where your stick once was, but it was my understanding the barometer sensor was under the hole centered on the bottom just left off the "Taiwan" stamp in your pictures.

Interesting thanks, the holes I was referring to are on the left hand side of the HR monitor, clearly exposed under the sticker. I wonder what that one is for then?

Well, since the holes under the sticker were exposed on your watch and you were having problems, perhaps you are correct and the bottom center hole is for something else?
  • I'm thinkiing my barometer is also faulty, this is from a hockey match on a pan flat artificial surface!!

replacement watch loads better at yesterdays game, just a few m difference during the game, vs 60-70m on the other watch!!

I’m glad to hear that. My replacement is on its way.

How did you get a replacement? I have this issue and it is annoying me. As soon as I step out in the cold I ascend at least 100m! Also my floor count is about 2-3 times out on flights up. Don't want to be without a watch though.
