935 does not auto connect to cycling power meter.

I use my Garmin 935 to log all my cycling activities instead of my 520 now (not ideal Garmin IMO fwiw...). And one of the annoyances is that it refuses to automatically connect with my power meters (wahoo kickr, and 4iiii). It will connect just fine once you dive through the menus and tell it to. I have no issues connecting manually, and no issues with signal loss or drop out. Additionally it has no problem automatically connecting to various other speed, cadence and HR sensors. It's just a hassle having to remember and connect to the power meter.

Does anyone else have this issue?
  • Mine connects to my Tacx automatically (via ANT+). What protocol are you connecting over and have you tried turning one of them off and seeing if having just one active works?

I'm using ant+, and the power meters are on separate bikes (initially I tried bt with the kickr and didn't get any satisfaction there either). The 4iiii is in range when I use the Kickr, but should be "asleep" When I use the 4iiii I would doubt the kicker was in range (I'm outside of the house when I start a ride with the 4iiii (the kickr is a indoor trainer with a dedicated bike)). I guess I can pull the battery from 4iiii and see if it helps with the kickr. Good to know that it's capable of automatically connecting.

(I just checked and it cant locate the 4iiii (it's "searching" and cant connect). The kickr is shown as available ("not connected") but wont connect unless I tell it to.)
  • Did it ever work? Maybe try deleting and re-pair the sensor? Also try a hard reset to be sure.
  • Mine certainly connects without intervention (Tacx, 4iiii & TeamZwatt)

No I've only had the watch a few weeks it's been this way since I've gotten it. I just removed the 4iiii from list of sensors, so it's only got one power meter associated with it now. Still doesnt auto connect. If I stop an activity and discard it, I can start back up and no power meter. It has no problem recognizing any other sensors, that's what I'm finding so perplexing.

I'm assuming that a hard reset will loose all my 935 data and thus pretty much negate the entire purpose of logging my rides with the watch as opposed to the 520?

Chunky, Thanks for suggesting a hard reset. While pondering the consequences of a hard reset it occurred to me that since I've received the watch I've never powered it down (heck, I sort of forgot that it was even an option). So I turned it off and waited a bit, turned it back on and it's playing real nice with the kickr now! So far it looks like success. Just needed to power it down!
  • You don’t lose data with a hard reset so you would have been fine. Glad you are sorted.
  • Terminology on resets can be confusing. I noted elsewhere that I use 'Soft reset' to distinguish a reset where you keep all your data from 'hard reset' where you lose it all.

    1. Power cycle - turn off, turn on.
    2. Soft reset (aka Hard reset) - Press and hold power button until unit turns off. Turn on again. All data kept.
    3. Hard reset (aka restore to factory defaults) - Turn off, Press and hold to right side buttons then press power button. Release upper button after first beep, lower button after second beep. Lose all data
  • Hi Philip, I believe a power cycle is what Garmin call a soft reset. A hard reset is pressing and holding the power and a master reset is the three button operation.

  • And you are undoubtedly correct. Life would be simple if we all sang from the same song sheet. Maybe I need to learn the words LOL!
