Automatic Lap - Custom Trainings

Former Member

Hi everyone,

I'm using the Forerunner 935 to run and I'm facing a problem when I do a custom training that I've uploaded.

The watch is doing the automatic lap (1km) during the training and I'm not getting the informations from the steps of my training.

For example, I've set these steps:

- 2km running
- 1 minute resting
- 5km running
- 2 minutes resting
- 6km running to finish

The 3 steps of running are not showed separality, Garmin does the automatic lap (1km) and I don't get the individual information just about the 5km.

Does anyone know how to deactivate the automatic lap in the custom trainings?

Best Regards,

Lucas Azeredo
  • Allowing auto-lap within a workout is clearly a matter of preference and Garmin should have allowed both preferences to co-exist.

If you'd had the 935 for more than a few minutes, you'd know the preferences can co-exist. Just not in the way some of us would like.

You seem to be making a habit of jumping in on threads and using them as a means to justify why you chose to return your 935. Must be time to get over it and move on.
  • Yeah and if you also choose any other current Garmin watch that does workouts then not going to be any different AFAIK. Nothing is "broken" here on the 935, you just need to understand how to configure the watch for your own needs. It could be better to do that configuration I agree but it is what it is.
  • Agree to must comments above.
it is not a bug, it is feature.

I don't remember how it behaved on 610 (assume or was disabled), but I do remember the recent 3 garmin models I used
    - 230 has autolap enabled in workouts. Got some time to get used, but there are some benefits as well
    - 920 autolap disabled in workouts. Less adaptation, by I quit using long run workouts from my training plan/ calendar - just to have it show laps. Bad habit - kills your habit of always starting a workout before run (and when I realise that you have not started your intervals after 20 mins warm up - I get upset)
    - 935 - laps are enabled in workouts. Did not take long to get used again

so at some point in time back in 2015 Garmin made a decision to have laps enabled. There are many backers for each side - agree

Ideally there shall be a setting "enable laps in workouts" (BTW in multi sport mode there is a setting "enable auto laps" that overrides those for individual sports I assume (and that may be another workaround BTW)

But even that setting won't make everyone happy.
I want laps on my longer runs and easy runs.
I want in off on intervals that are 1-2-2.5km
I am not sure about 3km intervals though, really.
I bet there are many people with slightly (or less sightly :-)) different preferences

So the settings shall be there in workout on GC. Which means that Garmin needs to update GC online, GC android, GC apple and firmware for all watches out there, all models that support workouts.
    Lot of fuss, eh?

    ps
I think they based their setting purely on point that autolap on shorter vo2max intervals won't harm (1-2 mins is less then typical 1km autolap that most runners use) and for threshold intervals it is easier to keep steady pace and autolaps (showing if you slowed down by the end of interval) give you actually more information then average pace for the whole longer interval

PS, as for 935 - I have not a single regret I upgraded from 920.
Yep, it gives less value/ increase as a sport watch, but UB daily use it is day and night. So if you don't wear watch daily - go back to 920.
I do (and ability to take mine to the office after morning swim was one of the reasons to buy)
  • This came in with the 230/235/630. The 610 and 920 were before that. Obviously the 935 was after.
  • Unfortunately Garmin broke this in the 920 also. I used to intervals twice a week using structured workouts and everything worked as expected, namely workout steps were considered laps. I just started doing intervals again after coming back from an injury and see that Garmin has broken that capability since I last used it.

Unfortunately Garmin doesn't publish what "features" are in various software releases. Had I known that Garmin was going to break this behavior I never would have applied a newer software release. I am now investigating this behavior with regard to devices from other manufacturers. Time for an upgrade.

If it were not for needing the Connect IQ "power" field, I'd use my 910 which still works correctly. (Namely, I haven't applied any software upgrades.)
  • Am I to understand that fields will reset correctly, and have segments written out at the end of workout segments if auto lap is turned off?
  • Not aware the auto lap functionality on the 920 had changed although TBH have not really being paying much attention to what is going on what device these days as thought nothing was. This is a bit off topic given this is the 935 forum but, even so, please post an example GC link to illustrate what you mean.
  • Ah, sorry. Forgot I was in the wrong forum. I was nosing around trying to find any of the Garmins that worked right. I don't think they make one yet.

The biggest hassle is trying to get values to reset on the watch at the end of workout segments. It seems that Connect IQ fields don't. I am having to hit the lap button at the end of intervals to get the value displayed on the device to start the measurements again, without regard to the average from the previous lap.
  • Any feedback from Garmin? Will we have the ability to disable auto lap in workout?
Is there a possibility to manually edit the laps so I can see the laps as per the planned workout? I know Polar have this feature
