Automatic Lap - Custom Trainings

Former Member

Hi everyone,

I'm using the Forerunner 935 to run and I'm facing a problem when I do a custom training that I've uploaded.

The watch is doing the automatic lap (1km) during the training and I'm not getting the informations from the steps of my training.

For example, I've set these steps:

- 2km running
- 1 minute resting
- 5km running
- 2 minutes resting
- 6km running to finish

The 3 steps of running are not showed separality, Garmin does the automatic lap (1km) and I don't get the individual information just about the 5km.

Does anyone know how to deactivate the automatic lap in the custom trainings?

  • But you could argue that on any run if have auto lap on but don't want it then you would have to turn it off.

OK my example was simple. If you start to have more than one long step and have "odd" distances like say 2.5 miles then it is going to take a lot of effort to break down each run step into parts to get your auto laps.
  • I guess its a moot point - which is why the discussion goes round in circles.
If I have autolap on at 1 mile intervals, do I get a lap marker at the end of the custom laps AND every 1 mile ? Now that WOULD be stupid.
Tim - if you are doing longer or more complex custom workouts, then it makes perfect sense to have that custom workout structure govern the lap creation.I'm not sure I understand which direction you are coming at it from in your last sentance. If you have longer and/or odd distances, then you can only really use the lap markers from the custom workout - the autolaps would be utterly pointless and, at worst, make it impossible to properly analyse the run if autolap suddenly fires during an interval. Creating a workout with any combination of bizare interval durations is trivial in the app/online.
I run most intervals in situations where I want to hit a particular pace for that intervals - 800s @ 6 min/mile for example. If autolap is on, what pace appears in that field ? The avg pace for the current autolap interval, that would contain a rest period ?
For me, the whole reason you are creating a customer workout is so that you can assess performance within each part of it. If you want to assess performance according to the autolap markers, just use a normal run profile! What am I missing here ?!
  • The auto lap would be whatever your auto lap distance is from the start of that lap/interval just like it would be if you took a manual lap in a regular run.

For me the only real point to auto laps in workouts was if was doing very long reps and so wanted some "feedback" during them.

800s should never be a problem here unless you have a rather short auto lap distance.

And if doing a mile interval with auto lap also one mile then no you would not get a double lap. You might if say were doing 6 min intervals and you did your mile a fraction under 6 mins.

Good point about what lap pace is if after an auto lap is taken. Not sure - would have to check.

TBH none of this is really an issue for me as I rarely use workouts anyway. Our track sessions are often "complicated" and so makes more sense just to take manual laps like we did with our Casio watches in the 1980s! I have however run into the auto lap "problem" if saying doing 1600 or 2000 reps. Of course it was not the end of the world to add two times together post session to check what time I did for that one.

Read this thread I started a while ago:

  • Which just goes to show that once again we rehash old discussions, ending up with the same arguments for and against.

Oh, another ‘improvement’ from Garmin. I don’t want auto laps to be on for custom workouts and don’t see why people would... it’s a custom workout - use that to create your laps!

Now I have to fiddle with my watch more as there is less automation. Starting to think my 920xt is better than this upgrade.
  • It's a battle that was fought and 'lost' for those who thought the same. Still, it's not the end of the world. You just have to get used to operating the 935 differently to what you were used to with the 920. Button placement is even more confusing!

Maybe, if there's enough support, we can get Garmin to incorporate an autolap on/off toggle in the custom workout settings as Tim suggested?
  • Suggest keep sending in the ideas for things like that. The change came about because of a perceived need to offer a choice. The challenge now is to make that choice more obvious.

I couldn't agree with you more gorbbs. That's another reason why I decided to return my 935, that is Garmin's philosophy around product "development". Introducing new "features" by breaking previous ones is not the way to go, especially in this case where there is no right or wrong answer. Allowing auto-lap within a workout is clearly a matter of preference and Garmin should have allowed both preferences to co-exist.
  • And here is a good advice for Garmin :-)
