Continuous HR registration from external sensor possible?

From another thread:
The auto option is there so that when an external HR is connected, that will be used instead.

I assumed that an external HRM would override the built-in optical HRM outside activities just as it would during activities, but that is not the case in version 6.00 and 6.75. Unless the HR widget is active, no HR is registered from a connected external HRM.
Is there a way to enable continuous HR registration outside of activities from an external HRM? (For example when not wearing the watch at night and using a different OHRM for RHR monitoring during sleep).
  • Tmk2 please get a 935 watch use a tri strap and when you Save the activity let me know if you select "Download Heart Rate".
Then tell me why you made your choice?

As I previously stated I use the HRM-Tri regularly. I never choose "Download Heart Rate" unless I have a reason to believe that during the activity the strap was disconnected from the watch. I do not mean accidental or uncontrolled disconnections. I mean situations where separating the watch from the sensor during workout is intentional and obvious. I'd do this - for example - when playing volleyball wearing the strap but with the watch resting in the storage locker or on the bench out of range of the sensor. Scenarios when manual downloading of heart rate is necessary might be quite rare, but still the option being there just in case makes sense.

Notice if you choose "Download Heart Rate" your training details will change.
    Why do the details change?

I don't know. This may be due to a bug or a limitation to the firstbeat algorithms used for TE calculation. Even if it's a bug it doesn't mean that the "Download Heart Rate" option is unnecessary.

I am starting to have trouble hiding my frustration.

I can fully understand that. Hopefully the issue will be cleared in the future, but in the meantime just don't use "Download Heart Rate" unless you complete a workout with disconnected strap.

Thanks for the feedback tmk2 and in the other post too (re Ant+ packets).
When I select "Download HR" after a run activity, the Aerobic TE decreases and the Anaerobic TE increases (as already stated).
I usually run in sand dunes and feel that the Anaerobic TE values should be higher.
I hear what you say, but I am still not sure what I should do, because an increase in Anaerobic TE seems more correct.
I wish Garmin would comment on this definitively.
  • I'm curious what would happen to the TE if HR data were downloaded from the strap several times for the same activity. Maybe I give it a try soon.

You can only execute "Download HR" once for any activity (non-swim). If you try a second time you get "HR Data Download Successful".
  • Nicki, sorry if I have missed this, what firmware are you on?

    Hi ChunkyW.
I am on 6.10 but this has been an issue since May.
Earlier on I was more distracted trying to get WHR to work with my first 935. I am onto my second watch.
  • Have you tried the beta, I think I remember there being some fixes for something like this?

I have given up with beta firmware unless it is specifically stated that a particular problem has been addressed. Thanks for the suggestion.
