Swim Activities Very Low Training Effect

Not really sure why but most of my swim activities give a very Low Aerobic TE - mostly about 1 - 1.2 for a typical session of about 25 mins. I have only once seen a significant TE of 4.1 for a 2000M river swim (about 40 mins) - Is this primarily a time related thing as most of my training sessions are limited to about 25 mins?
  • Hi again - sorry for the delay. My 935 updated to v7.0 overnight so it will be interesting to see if there are any changes. Unfortunately I've picked up a niggle and am not doing any hard swim sessions at the moment so I'll be interested to see if anyone else notices an improvement. I've also written back to Firstbeat this morning asking them if the fix mentioned a few posts up is the one we've been waiting for.
  • It is almost as though the only way to significantly increase your training load is to run. I do 15 hours per week swim/bike/run training, and when I swim there is no effect on my training load. For that matter, the bike effect is drastically lower than my perceived exertion. As a result, I've found the feature to be almost useless as a triathlete. I think if I were on a run program it would probably reflect reality.

I swam for an hour this morning and my training load is literally lower than before I got in the pool this morning.

I had the same problems with swims - hopefully this fix will address that. However I do think the nature of swim sessions (shorter intervals, then stop) means the HR load may well be lower in general.
As for rides, I've been learning a lot since following my training load closely over the last couple of months. I track it morning and night and before and after an activity. An average ride such as a 30km commute to work might only increase my TL by 50 or so because unless I'm pushing, my HR will stay in Zone 2 or maybe 3. To me this is natural because every so often you stop at a light and the HR comes right down. I also find it's hard to maintain a high HR when you're riding downhill. On my commute as I'm not in a hurry I might even just roll down the hill => HR comes right down again.
On the other hand, some more intense rides with significant portion of time time in Z4 and Z5 have seen TL increase by over 200, and I rarely ride more than an hour.
By comparison, the most I've managed with a very hard swim session was a TL increase of about 130.

I'm not a heavy trainer, I'd be interested to hear what TL increases others are getting from intense run/ride/swim sessions.
  • Ok Firstbeat have responded to my question from this morning and this is what they said:

Thank you for your message. We noticed this update as well and are currenlty testing if this mentioned improvement has fixed the problem with the Training effect calculation.
I will let you know as soon as I have more information about the issue.

And I will let you all know as soon as I have the information from Firstbeat!
  • OK I'm going to stick my neck out and say this has been fixed now. I did a pretty moderate session today and got an aerobic/anaerobic TE of 2.9/2.2 and a training load increment of 79, which seems a lot more reasonable.
  • Just an update on the training loads, this morning I saw my highest training load increment to date (360) with an aerobic/anaerobic TE of 4.7/5.0 from a 45k rolling hills ride.

  • Does this represent the effort you put in? Or are they just numbers?

I will also risk saying this has been fixed.
Today, I did a very light swim. The TE was 2.3 / 0.9 .This TE was almost the same as a swim done a month ago with more than double the distance / time and much higher intensity.
  • Bought my first watch but it seems that the same problems exists three years later. Shouldn't be so difficult for the good lads of Garmin right? Love the TE tool, but not recording swim activities is a problem.
