Strava Segments/Courses vs. Garmin 101

Hey all,

I've been using Garmin devices for longer than I can remember but I've never messed around with navigation. I've saved past runs as "courses" but that's about it.

I'm looking to pull down a starred segment (though it's technically more like a course with turns) from Strava and have it navigate me tomorrow via the 935. For someone new to the process, it's surprisingly confusing on how to do this (and Google hasn't been much help). Here's what I've done thus far:

- Strava Premium member
- Starred the course, so it now shows up in "Starred Segments" on Strava
- Downloaded "Strava Routes" via Connect IQ; synced the 935
- I switched GC segments to "Strava Live Segments" which now (via browser dashboard "Segments" module) shows the route under "Starred Segments."

Can someone please finish this step by step for me? I can't seem to pull it into "courses" or anything else. How do I pull up the turn-by-turn directions on the watch tomorrow to ensure I stay on the segment?

A huge thanks in advance!
Matt

  • Strava segments aren't for navigation, they're for competition. Afaik there's no turn-by-turn directions and the "strava live segments" feature doesn't even work while you're following a course. Afaik the whole point of strava live segments is just to pop up a goal to beat when you start a segment, and to show you how you did when you finish it. I think the assumption is that you know the segment route already; it's usually some hill or short loop (at least for running segments).

For your purposes, you can use this desktop Chrome extension to add an "Export GPX" button to Strava segments pages
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...m_source=gmail

Once you have that, you can import it as a course in Garmin Connect:
    Training > Courses > Import

Finally, you can send it to your device.

I tried it with a simple running segment (actually an entire race), and the FIT file that I pulled off my device after that entire process had coursepoints with turn-by-turn directions. (However, the FIT file that you get by exporting directly from GC doesn't seem to have turn-by-turn directions; apparently you only get TbT when exporting to certain devices.)

Yeah, that's a lot of steps. Unfortunately I don't know of an easier way which gives you turn-by-turn directions.
  • Disclaimer, I?ve never tried this on a 935 but in theory it should work. Create a course in Strava and then use the CIQ app to follow it. Maybe there is a way to convert segments to courses in Strava before you transfer it?
  • According to one review of the Strava Routes app, turn-by-turn directions are not supported (at least not on Edge 1000)....
    https://apps.garmin.com/en-GB/apps/9...32a1f7931335#0
Downloads Strava routes fine on the Edge 1000. Unfortunately, the routes don't have turn-by-turn directions, so not that useful.

Anyway, it doesn't seem to be possible to (natively) convert segments to routes in Strava. There's a whole support thread complaining about this.
    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/...egment-explore

Of course, you could use the Export GPX extension in Chrome, but then you may as well just do the whole procedure outlined above.

I can confirm, no turn-by-turn directions on FR935 either, which is a bummer because the route transfer is really convenient.

  • FWIW I got TbT on Edge 1000 using Strava routes, not tried one on the 935 yet....
  • In that case it might be that the Edge itself is providing TbT (which watches without mapping can't do), rather than TbT being added to the FIT file. (Doesn't explain the review tho)
  • I am not Strava premium user but like to compete on certain Strava segments. Found a very cool tool to convert Strava segments to Garmin segments:

    http://gniza.org/segments/#/

Works good. Just select your Strava segment and this creates a FIT file for the Garmin watch that can be copied to NewFiles. What is not so good is that the tool always creates bike segments. I have mailed the author of the site, but not response.

If someone with a license of fit file repair tool could check if the activity type in the segment can be changed to running? If have attached a generated one. Would be very nice. Thanks.

I seem to recall you can. If use a bin editor then can probably spot the byte to change anyway...
