Power off at night or not?

Just a quick question. For those of us who only wear their watch during the day, apart from the obvious battery saving aspect, is it best practice to power off the FR935 at night when it's not being worn or leave it turned on? I'm just thinking that having it on but not wearing it messes up the HR tracking.
  • I keep mine on, and just reboot every couple of weeks if things get buggy.
  • I have a couple of watches, and if I'm not wearing one, I keep it powered on. There can be time that things like a FW update may be coming OTA at night, including some of the smaller bits other than the main FW. If you're doing 24/7 activity tracking (steps, etc), there's also a sync that happens after midnight to get things set for the next day. (all of "yesterday's" data has been synced before you wake up.)
  • I turn it off at night...a) save some batt and b) no need to put wear and tear on any internal components...they have limited life so I don't see a reason to keep the altimeter/barometer/etc. working for 8+ hours unnecessarily.
  • Up to you but show me any advice anywhere where Garmin advise you to power off your device over night.

If you are concerned with it messing up the data then wear it 24/7 turning it off through the night will mess up some of the data, wont it? i.e. RHR the new Stress Score and others.

Mine has been on 24/7 since early this year :)

Why would they? They have no interest in helping you prolong the life of your wearable from 2 years to 3, etc....
  • Well that's one view.

http://static.garmin.com/pumac/Forerunner935_OM_EN.pdf does at least include a Device Care section where I note it does not tell to do anything that might need you to get a new device sooner rather than later.

I cannot see any specific advice in this area in the manual - probably as it does not really matter either way.

In any case, regularly turning devices off and on may not necessarily be "helpful" anyway.

How can turning the device off affect the barometer? The barometer senses the surrounding air irrespective of whether or not the device is turned on or not.

And what about the wear and tear on the power button...

  • To each their own...my concern for buttons isn't as great as any internal components going bad from 24x7 use...I'd rather power it all down. If you're more concerned about pushing the power button 2x/day then do as you please.

There is certainly nothing from Garmin to indicate that you should do one vs other but like any computer I'd rather 16x7 vs 24x7 when possible.
  • internal components going bad from 24x7

Other than the barometer, what internal components are you concerned about? It's not like a computer that has a number of whirling mechanical things that can wear.

More often than not, it's better to keep things moving anyway.
