Run power coming soon

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/10/garmin-running-power.html

Looks like Garmin is effectively going to kill Stryd with one fell swoop.

Not massively convinced by indirect power measurement but will give it a go just to see really. Clearly still a lot of development needed though beyond just a CiQ field as DC lays out.
  • And on "Stryd measures the vertical oscillation with 96.82% accuracy" then this is perhaps key as CloggyAbroad's run suggests at least 2cm difference in VO in less than 10cm. So if you believe the Stryd statement Garmin are "way out" on VO measurement. That would appear to be easier to verify than power as you can "see" lift off the ground...
  • Does the 735 really have more memory than the 935? Less features yes, hope they can add a third field at some point.

That's right, you do not need a footpod. But without a calibrated footpod you will never get consistent results on a treadmill as guessing pace from arm movement (using the internal accelerometers in the 935) is not as accurate as guessing pace from foot movement.

Right so wouldn't it make sense for RunPow to use data from a Footpod if it's available as that can give way better pace data than GPS?
  • Sadly the store won't let me download them as it says I need to update my watch. I'm on 7.00, my watch knows it and my phone knows it. Garmin dally with pooch again it seems

What's happening is the store doesn't know you are on 7.00 yet. What often works is to sync using Garmin Express, or re-pair the watch with your phone. The new FW was sent to your watch, but the store doesn't know if it's been installed yet.
  • I remember reading somewhere that Stryd have a slightly different definition of VO than Garmin (absolute movement on Garmin vs. movement of centre of mass on Stryd or something) which would explain the difference. Needles to say I cannot find it right now.

Could be - I see that Stryd white paper talks about centre of mass in relation to VO. I assumed it just meant how high off the ground you get. I am puzzled how you can measure the "centre" of something with a device attached to essentially one end though - your foot. A HR strap or the RD Pod would be more "central" !
  • How will Garmin measure exact Power without exact Pace? Ask about questions. .

Now that Running Power is live we created a sticky at the top of this thread. There are links to each data field and FAQs.

    Exactly my question too...

Try running in dense forrest and pace clearly suffers...
  • Yep nothing here about using the footpod, seems silly not to use it if available, or does "speed from the watch" mean it uses the footpod speed if selected ?

If the Foot Pod is being used as the Speed Source then Running Power will be calculated based on the data coming from the Foot Pod.

We are in the process of updated the FAQ to notate that a Foot Pod could be used as a speed source.
