Connect and transport data over WiFi automatically

I bought the Forerunner 935 being told the watch should automatically connect to the WiFi network (when you are in reach of it) and transport the data to the Garmin Connect account. It does not work for me and now the Swedish Garmin support seems unsure what it actually can do and not (Swedish support sucks). Has anyone managed to get the data transported automatically?

I know the wifi-connection works since I can manually initiate the data transport from the watch and get to over to garmin connect (without using the phone app or garmin express on the computer)
  • Hi Erik,

for me, it works out of the box (after connecting the wifi initially using GarminExpress). I don't know, how often the sync will be tried, but when I finish showering, all data are available in Connect.

Look at settings/wifi, there should be a item to allow automatic uploads.

    Ben
  • Thanks Ben, sure I have allowed automatic uploads but it does not work anyway. I have to manually press a button on my watch to initiate the transport. The Swedish support suggested I return the watch and get the money back, what a shame they don't get the correct info here.... If it works for you, of course I rather have the watch replaced

Just to be clear, you do not press any button at all, or do not use the app in your phone, you just move into the dedicated wifi network you have set up and then the watch automatically transport the data (at some point, at least daily, right)?

right, I just save the workout, in most cases before entering my wifi network-area. Bluetooth is off.

I said, i don't know, how often a sync will be tried: A workout, I did at morning without any possibility of wifi-upload was not uploaded automatically, when I get home at evening. I guess, there will be a number of tries and if no access, then the tries are terminated. But in my experiences, they will be active for more than half an hour: i.e. I saved a run at 5:24 pm and my wifi was activated by timer at 6 pm and the run was uploaded then automatically.

Are you sure, the signal strength of your router is good enough? some routers reduce signal strenght, when no device is detected.

Sounds great. Can you confirm that your setup (that is working) include both options enabled at the same time? I mean, can you have your phone set up to connect and transport data to Garmin connect both via the app in your phone (Bluetooth) AND via the router or accesspoint (WiFI)? I am wondering if I need to shut down the connection with the phone (bluetooth) in order to get the connection over wifi to work. If I understand you right you have both options on and it will take one of them, but both automatically without the need for you to initiate by pressing any buttons or similar?
  • I just realise one thing. You people that have the automatic wifi data transport working , can you confirm if this data transport include heart rate data? I am using the watch also to keep track of daily heart rates. It means some days the watch has only recorded heart rate data (this is logged all 24 hours), but I am hoping it will transport that also (even if there is no activity logged like a run, swim etc.)
  • yes, the upload does include hr-data. but to be clear: uploads (wifi) are only initiated by a finished and saved workout. no workout, no upload!. the daily hr-data and steps, elevations and whatever are not uploaded automatically. but they are transported too, when a workout is going to upload. so, if you have no workout for a few days, there will be no upload. with the next workout, all data from the past days will be sent too.

the behavior of bt-uploads is different, i guess. there is a permanent connection and data is sync often.
  • no workout, no upload!

This is the most important part, "automatic" wifi upload simply means "as soon as you finish a workout". That's it. Garmin might have phrased this a bit better, but apart from manual sync there is no way to have your watch synchronise on a regular schedule. It should also sync all of your non-workout data, including 24/7 HR, sleep time, steps etc.

That sucks. But seems like a potential explanation to my errors, I think my tests were without workout at that time. I will try with workout made first in the next test.

Do you know if it is different with the bluetooth connection (from watch via bluetooth to phone app and then forward to Garmin connect)? In other words, will the other data in the watch (HR, sleep data etc.) be automatically sent from the watch to Garmin connect (via the app in the phone) without manual initiation?

The thing is that I have a very specific monitor need that will only be fulfilled if the person wearing the watch does not need to do anything more then just be close to wifi. Or in next best case, close to a phone where an app can be installed and receive the data for further forwarding to Garmin Connect.

If the Forerunner 935 does not do the job, does anyone know of another Garmin product that will record heart rate data and automatically transport the data through wifi on a regular basis without the need of manual initiation?

Have a look at #10. Quaternione said, this works via BT. I myself have BT always off.

    Edit: he was faster :)
  • Well,

if that person opens the app, a sync process is triggered.

The bluetooth sync also starts automatically, but I don't no what the trigger is. I noticed that there is at least one sync every morning for uploading the sleep data to GC via Bluetooth, there may be other that have escaped me. But in any case, as soon as the app is opened to look at the data, a sync is performed.

    Q.

So if I understand you correctly, no bluetooth sync is done unless you actively initiate it by opening the app?

I am trying to find a way to sync data in the watch with Garmin connect without the need to manually initiate it (without the need of pressing a physical button on the watch, opening an app or any other manual initiation).

If I sum up the experiences above correctly, so far the only "real automatic" sync is if and after an activity has been recorded (but of course then the actual activity tracking have to be initiated manually). Then the watch will automatically start a sync process when it find the default wifi network.

Doesn't solve my problem unfortunately, I am trying to monitor someone that can not handle technology at all...
