Second map screen for navigation?

Is there any way to have two separate map data fields in navigation mode? I've been playing around with the data field configuration, but it doesn't seem possible. It can't be added as another custom data fields. I like having the map screen fixed at a zoomed in view, but I would also like to have a second map screen showing the overall route with my current location on the route. It's a hassle to have to zoom in and out to switch between these two views (too much button pressing). It'll be nice to just switch back and forth between two map data fields (at different fixed zoom levels) with a single click. Auto-zoom doesn't work well at all so I have it disabled.
  • Don't think so am afraid. Only possibility is if somebody implemented a CIQ data field that was a map. However might be performance issues rendering that.
  • This is one of the few cases where a (functional) touchscreen would really add a lot of value to a Garmin watch. (Pan/zoom without 20 different button presses; I'm sure any Garmins with touchscreen+navigation already implement this, just as the music controls are much easer to use on the touchscreen watches -- not that I ever use music controls, but I've heard the complaints.)

A second map screen would be a cool feature request for garmin. I have a similar problem where I leave auto-zoom on, but sometimes I want to pan/zoom manually and it's a huge pain. Not sure if it would ever happen, but I guess it can't hurt to ask.

Another idea would be the ability to switch (with "only" 2-3 button presses) between:
    - (auto) zoomed-out view
    - (auto) zoomed-in view

(Assuming both were implemented in a reasonable way.)

I could be wrong, but that might make the majority of people happy, without even having the ability to pan/zoom manually.
  • Hi Guys, Sorry new to these forums. Recently bought a Fenix 5X and bought some marine charts to suit. My main application is not marine. I have uploaded the maps via Garmin Express however I am not able to view the marine map. I am not in the marine map area so do I need to be on the water in the map zone to view the map?

A simple way, I would think, to implement this is via hotkey shortcut. Hold a hotkey button that allows switching back and forth between the current set zoom level and overall view. That would reduce the number of button clicks to switch views to just one. Many of the hotkeys now don't do anything unless you're in an activity, so this would be sort of a similar implementation. No need for a second map screen if this was somehow implemented. The Ambit3 and TomTom watches, from what I've read and watch, allows switching views via button press. Seems odd that Garmin hasn't implement anything yet for this watch or the current Fenix lineup.

You may want to try asking your question in the Fenix 5X forum instead. They may be able to better help.
  • Check out the CIQ field, DWMAP. It actually works pretty well. Not quite as convenient as the built in map, and won't show the detail level, but should accomplish what you are looking for.

    That's an app though?

Thanks Tim and yes, dwMap is an app, although I think ekutter might have been suggesting it in the context of using it as an app not a field? Zooming is certainly a lot easier in dwMap than in the FR935's built-in map feature, though I usually steer people to routeCourse rather than dwMap on the 935 and Fenix 5 watches, to get the benefits of our dynamicWatch route import/download platform while using all the great built-in maps/activities features of those watches.

Prior to getting the 935, I had a Forerunner 235 and used dwMap several times for navigation since the 235 didn't have that feature. The app works great and easily allowed switching between 4 fixed zoom levels. The limitation with the app is that routes loaded are simplified to 200 GPS points max due to memory constraints for the app (from what I remember when communicating with the developer). It's fine for short and simple routes. However, when the route gets too long and complex with too many turns, the route gets oversimplified when loaded to the watch. A series of turns may load as just a straight line for example. The routes I've loaded on the 935 (using routeCourse), so far, don't appear to have lost much, if any, detail when used in navigation. At this point, I do prefer the built-in navigaton over dwMap. Just have these annoyance like the lack of easy switching between zoom levels plus a few other things here and there.

Since the developer just replied to this post, can I ask is there any possibility to increase the GPS point limitation for the app for watches like the Forerunner 935 and Fenix 5 series since they have a higher memory constraint for Connect IQ apps then older watches. I wouldn't mine using dwMap on the 935 if not for the GPS point limitation of the routes compared to the built-in navigation.

Hi sanchhat. To confirm, yes dwMap has to simplify routes to 200 points in order to fit into the memory (and also the processing speed) of the full watch line. routeCourse does not have the low limit. Regarding increasing that limit on the more powerful watches, please could you email me and we'll setup a test? I can give you a special build with a higher limit, and we can see how it runs on your 935. I'd be very curious myself about that.
