Navigation notifications During Activity - cycling

So i set a destination on my phone so directions are sent to my watch which works great.

However - if i record the cycling activity i still get the alert but have to press the down button to view it. This isn't very practical (even dangerous!) and was wondering if there is a way for the navigation alert to show the full message?

Not tried yet this with running but presume it would be the same.
  • Not sure what you mean by set a destination on your phone? Is that a course?
  • heya - so set destination on google maps on my phone. Start the journey and navigation alerts are sent to my watch. But if you're recording an activity the watch tells you there's a notification but not the details of it.
  • I see the same thing - it does not show the complete notification during an activity, just the headline, such as "Incoming call". For instance, an incoming call won't show the number or contact name unless you press the down button. Not a problem for running, but a potentially dangerous for cycling.

Personally, I'd prefer to see the whole notification during an activity, or at least have the option to do so.
  • The message is not the danger. It's trying to read it that makes it potentially dangerous behaviour. If you want to read a message that pops up while cycling then the safest thing to do is to stop. I can't think of anything worse than trying to read a screenful of information while trying to ride a bike.
  • I was thinking of this same thing just yesterday but nothing to do with cycling. I had a route going in google maps and was walking around Seattle. Phone in my pocket. It would have been great for the nav updates that appear on my phone to also show on the watch. eg "turn left in 500ft", etc. but instead you just get a generic alert from google via the watch and have to pull out a phone to check the nav update. Walking around in a major metro it's more dangerous to pull out the phone. :)

That's true, you certainly shouldn't be reading complicated notifications whilst riding. I was thinking more of the "Incoming call" notification. It would better to see the caller name without a button press. That way you can glance at the watch and decide whether or not to stop to deal with it, or let it go to voicemail and continue riding.
  • I think the whole point of alerts whilst riding running or walking would be informative and simple to use. So if i'm going for a 100mile ride through country lanes it saying at least left or right in place of the text 'navigation notification' (or whatever it says) would be very useful and safer. Plus you can leave your phone at home or in your pocket. Would be great of this could be improved Garmin!

its a lot safer to read a message that says left or right than have to take both hands off the bars, press a button then read the text. Maybe they could signal left or right via the vibrations and beeps? 2 long for next right, 1 long 1 short for next left and 3 short repeatedly for wrong way.
