Milestone Pod now with real time pace for FR935 (and Fenix 5)

Just got a Milestone Pod after finding out it can now be paired to the FR935 for real time pace and cadence data on top of the insights and data in the smartphone app. Will be doing my first run tomorrow.

Any other Milestone Pod users here ?

  • Any more opinions on the milestone footpod?
I am not a professional runner and would just use it to track my runs on the treadmill during winter time. I only care about total distance and speed as I believe my treadmill is way off with the values it displays.

Having said this, would the milestone pod be something I should go for or is the garmin foot pod the better option? Stryd is definitely too expensive for my purposes.
  • I've found accuracy to be "variable" but still reasonably good. I think it's a lot better value than the Garmin footpod that had no built-in features and costs 2x+ the price ! I'd give it a try ;-)
  • I use a couple of Milestone pods (one left, one right) but only with the Milestone app at the moment. As a foot pod with the FR935 the realtime speed/cadence data is good, but in the activity summary the average cadence will be displayed as 1.
I did not ask Milestone about this, had no time to check if there were specific conditions under which this occurred.
    Milestone has superb customer support.
BTW if you install an app on your phone that alerts for iBeacons, it will signal if your own or someone elses Milestone pod is active and nearby, it is fun to try.
  • A quick update as I've been going back and forth between the Milestone POD, the Garmin POD...and the Adidas POD...Overall I'm not very happy with the Milestone POD as it tends to lag compared to the Garmin (and the Adidas) PODs, they must be using some more smoothing algorithms. On top of that the pace was completely inaccurate (4'30/km vs 5'15/km) for a few of my runs with no plausible explanation so I went back to my Garmin POD that...died on me after 4 years. First I got a low battery warning and then even with a new battery it doesn't get recognized. So on to the Adidas POD I had hanging around and it's essentially the same as the Garmin except it has a caching feature in there that was used with an Adidas app back in the day.

For some reason the Milestone POD is feeding correct pace data again to my FR935 but it still lags and tends to be too fast when I start my runs. Overall I can't say I find it very useful unfortunately...
  • I'm wondering if anyone else can comment on their use of the Milestone POD with the 935. I have had the POD since November, but was using it mostly in offline mode or with Zwift for much of this time. With Zwift it seemed like the pace was a little jumpy and inaccurate at times (even after calibrating through various interfaces)

More recently (maybe about 2 weeks now) I have paired the POD with my 935. In my last few treadmill runs I have seen some pretty weird data on the pace plot. It looks almost like frequent signal drop out...

    Activity with pace issues:

Another activity, this one looks good:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2437496598

I had another activity with a similar issue to the linked "pace issue", but that one also had horribly inaccurate distance recorded (0.08 miles recorded for a 1 mile run). I later edited the distance of the activity with GC Mobile and the pace plot now looks a little more correct. It almost looks like it switched to wrist pace data once I edited the total distance.

For what it's worth, I have used a Garmin Footpod for a few years without problems and generally use my footpods for Distance and Speed as "Indoors". My Milestone has auto calibration turned off (and I have checked its own calibration through their app a few times), and set the cal factor to 100.0.
  • Mine's been quite ok recently, the only difference I'm seeing with the Garmin footpod is that there is more "smoothing" done at the footpod level, seemingly there is none with the Garmin. As a result the GC charts look better ;-) I check the app from time to time to see if the distance is accurate and more often than not it is.

For some reason I can't see any map/charts on your activities ?
  • Just wondering if the 935 has the same bug as the Fenix 5 with regards BLE foot pods and not respecting the Distance>Always setting for outdoor runs (impacts Milestone and RunScribe pods) https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-t...libration-help It might explain inconsistencies people are seeing.
  • My Garmin foot pod is dying (2nd one) - I have to hit it a few times before it wakes up! Just ordered a milestone from a distributor in Thailand. I couldn't find anyplace in Hong Kong. I don't get distance from the foot pod, so hopefully, the bug described above won't affect me.
  • Having to hit it a foot pod before it wakes up can be a symptom of battery contact problems, this can happen if dirt made its way into the pod or if the battery is too thin (when a CR2025 battery is used instead of the CR2032), it's worth a try to check that.
My Milestone pods needed firmware updates to provide realtime pace and cadence, maybe yours too - best to contact Milestone support for help on that.
  • That update was pushed automatically via the app months ago (like early August) and before that there was no RT info. There is no bug that I can see using the Milestone with the FR935, the only possible issue is calibration within the Milestone app and/or not turning off auto-calibration on the FR935 and not setting it to 100.

I also had problems with my Garmin FP after a battery change as I couldn't get the battery out without removing the "contact circuit" in the back and it turns out it needs to be placed in a specific way for the FP to work. Using the "grooves" in the plastic I was able to put it back properly.
