HRM-run vs HRM-Tri

Hi,

I want to buy a Heart rate monitor. Here in France, I have the choice between the HRM-run (the red model, Amazon, 72 €) and the HRM-tri (blue, 129 €). It will be coupled to my FR 935. I would like to know if one forgets the memory function of the tri version, are the sensors exactely the same on both models, for running and cycling ?

Best regards

From what I'm reading everywhere, sensors seem to be exactly the same. There might also be a slight difference in strap comfort. But the tech for monitoring while on runs or rides activities (not storing & transmitting) is the same.
  • Physically they are identical save of course for the red or blue colour.

So yes the memory function of the HRM-Tri is the only difference.
  • 129 euros seems very expensive for a HRM-Tri - they are available for 81euros I with free delivery. I bought mine from Wiggle and I know they deliver to France.
  • No longer available at Wiggle it seems ?
Since you're in France you could check Leboncoin, people often sell new HRMs they don't need from bundles.

My understanding of the differences are as follows.

    1. Tri has memory to record swim HR - the Run does not
    2. Tri & Run give identical feedback for cycling
    3. Tri provides 3 running metrics, cadence, GCT & VO where as the run gives 6...those 3 plus, GCT Balance, Stride Length & Vertical Ratio
  • Agree with most of that although I have the Tri and I'm sure I get those last 3 - GCT Balance, Stride Length & Vertical Ratio.

You maybe right Steve....I reproduced what is on Garmin's tech spec sheets for the devices. I too have the Tri and also the Run and Swim and as a practical matter rotate useage of Tri & Run to keep battery use evenish(!!) .... I don't spend too much time on the running dynamics but out for a run this morning so will double check and update here.

  • Finally I bought the HRM-run, red color. I tried it in a treadmill activity. I was very surprised to see how the stride lenght given by this sensor is wrong !

    - Previously, I was using the Garmin Footpod and the result was 4.5 kms for 30 minutes and 9 km/h
    - Now, i.e. with the HRM-run, I got about 6.8 kms for the same activity. The tradmill display shows 4.5 kms of course.

The stride length shown on Garmin connect is almost 1.40m but I know that mine should be about 0.87m. Garmin seems to link this parameter to the sensor and not to the user profile ! This is so strange.

The qestion is how to calibrate correctly the stride length with the HRM-run ? Should I do some outdoor activity for that ?
With the footpod, things are a lot more obvious. One can find a calibration menu in the watch menu for that.

    Best regards

  • I'm not sure but probably the best idea is to go outside for a run and see if that helps.

Steve.... double checked and as per Tim's original response, the Tri does give all the running metrics the same as the run version...... how silly of me to doubt him :)
