My new FR 935 experience

I have received my new FR 935 on last tuesday. I bought it from the garmin european online shop. It took onlu 5 days from order to delivery ! I was afraid because the payment page indicated that it can take up to 9 weeks to receive the watch. Anyway, here are my remarks. My previous watch was the FR 230:

Positive

1- Technically speaking, one can feel that everything which is possible by the technology has been included
2- As always, the materials used by Garmin are of very good quality
3- The weight is very light and the watch is confortable
4- The GPS works very, very well
5- The barometer seems to be very precise and reliable
6- All kind of activities (many, many, many !) are already included
7- The battery seems to last very long when using the GPS
8- Syncing using the Wi-fi at home is a must have in comparison with the smatphone syncing

The "negative" side

1- The time indicated in a data field during an activity is always in the US format, i.e. am and pm. In the watch mode the european 24h mode works very well.
2- It is impossible to choose a data field corresponding to the number of steps made during an activity, at least for running and hiking
3- I have not succeeded to link my Garmin Tempe ant+ sensor.
4- I would like to know how the altitude automatic calibration works

I have received the watch with the firmware 3.40 and the 4.10 update was applied the same day.

  • About the negatives:

    1. Eh, whut? Proper 24hr format here... You might want to check if your settings are also correct in garmin connect, sometimes that overwrites the watch settings (synchronizing settings is tricky with garmin, doens't always make sense)
    2. Do you mean changing a datafield based on the nr of steps? Or just a datafield with the nr of steps. With the latter I might be able to help and make something in ConnectIQ, about the first... eh, nope.
    3. Doesn't detect? Or what is the issue...
    4. Luckily they invented google for that: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/FhOYuggxmV6Atph276U4h8

1 . The time format is the right one when the watch is in the ....watch mode. The am and pm format is used instead when performing an activity. I have checked my Garmin Connect profil. It is 100% OK.
    2. Well I mean a simple datafield based on the number of steps, like on jm58 app I used on my FR 230
    3. The Tempe sensor is very well recognized by the FR 230.. but not at all by the FR935. I have tried many times.
    4. For the altitude autocalibration, my hope was that the watch software could read some srtm data through the smartphone syncing. This would be the most precise way.

  • 1. Definitely works as expected for me - time field shows as 24hr
  • 1. Works for me as well. I have never seen any problems with 24h time format.

In GC, do you have 24h set on both account settings and device settings? (Only the latter should matter in this case afaik.) Is it a ConnectIQ data field or the native "time of day" field? (Both work for me, at least with the CIQ data fields I use).

If it's a CIQ data field, you may want to contact the app developer. If it's just the native "time of day" field", you may wish to contact Garmin support.
  • Indeed ! The account settings were good but not the device ones. Now, the time format is 23:59. I apologize.

  • No worries! No need to apologize, it's actually ridiculous how many overlapping settings exist in both the GC user profile and device settings. Start of week is another example. Sure it would be nice to optionally control those things on a granular level, but only if the user chooses to do so. Most users would want all their garmin websites, apps and devices to use the same setting for time format imo.
  • 2. There's got to be a simple CIQ steps field but I haven't looked. If you had one working for the 230 from jim58, I'd contact Jim (just go to any of his apps page). It should be trivial for him to make it work on the 935 and he's pretty responsive.

    3. Interesting. Mine connected with no problem. If your 230 can see it, it shouldn't be a battery issue, but might be. Is your 230 still picking up the Tempe?

    4. There are a couple of threads discussing the elevation calibration. In general, it's not as good as we'd like. But if you know the current elevation where you generally start, do a manual calibration at that point. My understanding is it will use this during the auto-calibration in the future. The main thing missing is that it doesn't continuously calibrate during a workout, just when you hit the start button.
  • I found the 'simple steps' data field which just puts the current step count in a data field. Seems to work well

  • I've also made the steps carousel that contains this: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/2316ce8d-bd99-430b-b7ac-9f8490f2e912
Source code available so you can tweak it to your specific needs if necessary :)
  • Succumbed to the lure of new technology and got my 935 today. No real issues setting it up except when it came to connecting to ANT+ devices - external HR and GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor. It appeared to be unable to find the sensors despite my 920 having no problems. After multiple attempts, I gave up and set up some other activities. Went into the Run app and found that, despite being informed otherwise, the external HR had been connected. Same with the speed/cadence sensor connected to my bike. Software is 4.10.
