Worth the upgrade, 735xt to 935?

Hey guys,
I currently own the Forerunner 735xt and I love it. I have no problems with it at all. I've owned many predecessors to this watch throughout the past four years and enjoyed using them all, however I settled with the 735xt for the optical heart rate monitor. I use my watch mainly for running, sometimes I'll bring it swimming or biking with me, but that's only about once a week.
I'm in a bit of a predicament. I know there is a new version of the watch out now, the 935. I'm wondering if you guys think it's worth the upgrade - to sell this watch and get the new version. I'm headed off to a D1 college next year and was wondering if the advantages of the newer version are worth it - or should I just wait until the next upgrade is available.
I would appreciate your guys opinion, hopefully, someone who made the same switch could let me know what they think...
Thanks in advance,
-Meekle
  • I switched. The 935 is just better. In lots of little ways. If you can afford it then I'd upgrade.
  • I switched from a 630 but I agree totally that the 935 is better than any previous Forerunner in so many little ways (none of which "justify" the price, but if you can afford it, go for it.)

To put it a different way, I was always jealous of all the little extra features in the Fenix 3/5, but the high price and large/heavy form factor turned me off. I'm still not super happy about the price, but the 935 was the watch I was waiting for (lighter/cheaper Fenix 5). (I once almost considered getting a 735 and now I'm glad I didn't).
  • You probably need to ask yourself what you wish the 735 could do better that you actually want and whether the 935 actually does it especially if budget is an issue. There is a similar thread at moment on talk of conversion from 920 where I and others listed some "advantages" with the 935

Basically you rarely "need" to "upgrade" but often you may want to for some incremental reasons.

I prefer the 735xt because it has 3 concurrent connect iq data fields, 935 only 2 I think.

After making the upgrade myself, can't say if it objectively is worth it but I'm happy with it.

It's just the better thing overall, the screen is much better as is the overall build quality (the 735xt felt really plasticky). I like how the new software is set up, the battery is a bit better again. Real 24/7 heartrate.

If you have, and can miss, the money... Go for it. If you're kinda tight on budget it might not be worth it. (As functionality wise it's not that different).

Thanks for all of the responses guys, I really appreciate it. Had to make a new account because my other one wouldn't let me sign in...

Something I find desirable about the 935, being a very competitive runner, is the more frequent 1-2 second intervals in which it records your resting heart rate, as well as the added training analytics with workload data and fitness data. Would you say that the added functions (running specific) are worth it?
Is it more smart to wait until the next Forerunner release - any ideas as to when that will be?

I know this is all very subjective, just looking for more opinions.
    Thanks again,

  • If you are still undecided, see if you can find a local shop with a 935 and bring your 735 with you. There are things like how the display looks that you really can't see in pictures. Personally, I think the whole user interfaces (fonts, how you do things, etc) on the 935/f5/f5x is a huge improvement over the semi-rounds like the 735. (if you can't find anyone local with a 935, you can see this if you find someone with a Fenix 5 for this.)

Someone else mentioned the build quality and that's also easier to see first hand.

Update: I looked back in the thread, and noticed there wasn't anything about the baro altimeter! Personally, I find baros MUCH more accurate than GPS based altimeters. The 935 has a baro, the 735 doesn't.
  • Agree with Jim on the looks etc but TBH being able to do things like plotting your resting HR every 1-2 mins (not secs) on GC isn't going to make you run any faster - well unless it is telling you are totally knackered all the time and need to go and lie down!

Training load is interesting, if sometimes puzzling, but again it's only have a nice to have IMHO.

Thanks so much for all of the feedback guys. I really appreciate your help. I had to create a new account to post a reply because it wouldn't let me sign in on the other one.

Anyways... as a very competitive runner, what appeals most to me about the 935 is the workload/fitness level analytics, as well as the 1-2 second resting heart rate recording interval.
I'm more interested in the watches accuracy when it comes to these analytics compared to the 735xt. How accurate is the Pace, GPS, Heart rate? Is it worth the upgrade in this sense?

Another thing I love about the 735xt is how light and slim it is. It feels like I'm not wearing anything during intense intervals, tempos, etc. how does the 935 compare? Is it noticeably heavier/bulkier? I used to have a Fenix 3 and couldn't stand the weight/bulk during hard workouts, it was just too much watch - I like my watches feeling fast.

Do you guys think that the 935 is more "running specific"? How would you rate it out of 10 compared to the 735xt (for running)?

And lastly, is it smarter to wait for the next Forerunner series watch to release, (anyone know how long a new release usually takes)?

I know a lot of this is subjective, I'm just looking for all the information I could get.

    Thanks again,

Thanks for all of the feedback guys, really appreciate it.

As a very competitive runner, the training load/fitness analytics are very intriguing. One of my favorite things about the FR 735xt is how light and slim it is, I can run hard intervals, tempos, etc. and wear it all day without noticing I'm wearing a watch.
I know all of this is subjective, but do you guys notice any bulk/weight difference with the FR 935? Which watch do you think is a better running specific watch? Is the GPS/Pace/HR any more accurate on either of the devices?
    Thanks again
