"This app requires an update of your Forerunner 935." (but my 935 is up-to-date)

GC/GCM/GE ask me to update my 935 when I try to install certain apps (but not others), even though my 935 is already up to date. e.g.
https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/5e57ee96-3f22-4448-9f54-a3f375c44b10

I'm guessing the apps which won't install require the latest SDK. Gather this is something that's happened in the past for some users. Is anyone else seeing this?
  • I hear about this with other watches once in awhile with my apps. For some reason, it seems at times the app store doesn't know you've updated your firmware.

What may help, is to sync using Garmin Express. If that doesn't work, you can try re-pairing your watch with your phone.

You also may want to make sure the latest FW has been installed on your watch, and not just waiting to be installed, by checking "About" on the watch itself.

I have actually done those things several times recently (having restored the watch to defaults several times to test a couple of things). I'll try it again, though. Maybe the restore to defaults actually had something to do with it.

    Thanks!

This has happened to me before. Try removing the app from the watch via Garmin Express, check your watch to make sure it's actually gone (that also has happened to me. GE removed the app but some things were left behind). After everything is gone, reinstall the app and set it up in. GE.
  • I should have mentioned that I did get an error syncing with GE on the first sync after restore to defaults, which probably has something to do with it. But GE claims that it thinks my software is up-to-date. (Which it is.) I tried it again on a different user account on my PC, and GE claimed my software needed an update, gave me a sync error, and said that my software is up-to-date.

Guess I'll contact Garmin Support and hopefully they can fix it on their end.

Thanks, but I can't because it won't install in the first place. Like Jim said, I think the app store thinks my watch firmware is too old for the app I want to install.
  • Do a hard reset before doing the above items. If clearing the cache doesn't help, you might have to do a factory reset. It could be the app too. Good luck.
  • For the dozenrun/cycle, This is my number one question from users. Reboot your watch twice and restart connect app or garmin express (whatever you are using).
A install time maintenance flag is stale and requires both the watch and host app to be restarted.

Thanks, but unfortunately it didn't work. I love dozen run btw. Recommend it to every runner I know.

It only happens with some apps and not others. I assume it's apps that require the latest sdk, although I'm not 100% sure. There was a watch face that just added 1s updates which also wouldn't install. I am currently able to install Dozen Cycle and some other apps. Just not the specific widget that I want. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's only compatible with F5 and 935, so it may very well require the latest sdk. Of course garmin express and garmin connect claim my watch is up-to-date (which it is). It's just the app store which tells me I need an update. I don't think there's anything wrong with the apps, since nobody else is complaining.

Appreciate all the attempts to help! I'll wait for Garmin support to sort this out.
  • So I managed to fix it after all.

Somehow my GarminDevice.xml was in the same state as when I updated to the 4.02 beta a while back (more than a couple of weeks ago), even though I am running 4.10. Probably the result of a half-applied update.

The whole time the XML file said my version was "402", even after I updated to 4.10. Which probably explains why Garmin Express kept giving me sync errors initially. I also noticed it kept trying to give me a GUPDATE.GCD even though I already had the latest. Guess that should've been a clue. Funny that even multiple "restore to defaults" (a few days ago) didn't clear this up. (But I already found that it doesn't delete screenshots either. That brings up the question of whether you can really be sure you set your watch back to "factory" state or not. You could trying deleting everything in the file system after "restore to defaults", but will the watch work properly? In my case, would the broken garmindevice.xml be restored by the watch, just like it restores SPORTS/ if you delete the folder? It's just funny to me that "factory defaults" isn't really "factory defaults". I would've expected everything to be regenerated in proper working order, as well as any stray/user-created files to be deleted.)

So I edited the file manually to replace "402" with "410", synced with GCM and I can install any app now.

    Thanks again for the help!
  • Never heard of anybody manually editing their GarminDevice.xml before! Clearly not something you should have to do but sounds like it sorted your issue.

Did you try and reapply 4.10 assuming it actually offered you the update given the GUPDATE.GCD for 4.10 was seemingly there?
