Using music controls while running?

I added the music controls widget to my running activity data screen. While recording a run...scroll down to music controls but can't figure out how to use it... if I hit start/stop it stops my run rather than start /stop my song.
  • I don't know how to use it as a widget during a run, but I added music controls as a data screen and control music that way.

Unfortunately you have to long-press Up to get the context menu on Music page, then select Music Controls, which will allow you to actually use the music controls, as opposed to just looking at the name of the currently playing song. Every "interactive" data page is like this (e.g. to pan/zoom on the Map page, you have to long-press Up and select Pan/Zoom). Then you press Back to get back to the normal data page loop.

The reason for this is that Up/Down/Start/Back always have the same functions on every data page, no matter what page you are on (this is pretty understandable, because obv Garmin doesn't want any page to interfere with the normal run/cycle/other activity function of the watch.). This is where a touchscreen (that could be disabled and that was optional to use) would really come in handy. (I hated the 630 touchscreen because it was finicky and you had to use it to scroll and to answer certain prompts.)

I dunno if using the Music Control widget during a run would be easier or harder than the Music "data page", but you can return to the widget/clock loop during a run.

You have to assign a hotkey such as Hold Start to Widgets, which you can use at any time. (Menu > System > Hotkeys)

Once you're in the widget/clock loop during an activity, you press Back to return to the activity data pages, or press Start on the clock page.
