Start a workout with GPS on 935

New to the watch and the forum, thanks for all the great information.

I've managed to create workouts and get them onto the watch, however when I hit the "Do Workout" for a running workout, everything gets started before the GPS gets a chance to sync. Is there a way to get the GPS synced for a workout before the timers start?

Thanks

Stuart
  • If you select the Run activity (or any GPS-based activity) without starting the timer, the GPS will start to sync (and the watch will try to connect to whatever sensors you set up, like HR strap or footpod). I usually wait a little bit after it says it fully synced -- I like to look at the pace field and wait for it to settle down, if necessary. (Sometimes I'll see crazy numbers in the pace field for a few seconds after the GPS has sync'd, even when standing still.)
  • Usually selecting 'Do Workout' just loads the workout and, as noted, the GPS will begin the process of acquiring satellites. You then have to press Start to begin the workout and start the timers. Are you sure the timer is starting immediately after you select 'Do Workout'? Are you certain you are not pressing Start after selecting to do the workout?
  • If a workout is scheduled in the calendar, it immediately offers the workout upon selecting "Run". If the workout is started from this point, gps/hr/footpod status screen is never shown. It would be handy for the status to be shown prior to starting the workout.

To be safe, I usually press the back button to get to the data screen, check the status and then reselect the workout from the Training menu once everything has synced.

    Thanks

    Chris
  • Thanks

Thanks folks, the going to Run, waiting for GPS sync, backing out then loading the workout worked. As ChrisDR2 mentioned when you press Do Workout you get a Start Workout screen but there's no indication of any of the status (RD POD, GPS etc) - would definitely be an improvement to be able to see that before you press Start.
  • Glad you found a workaround but I'm wondering if there's a simpler way that doesn't involve going into Run, backing out, then loading your workout. Or loading a workout, backing out, and loading it again. (If I'm understanding the workarounds correctly.)

    Does this work:
    - Select Do Workout (you get a page which says "Start timer to begin workout") (do not press start or back at this point)
    - Press Down (takes you to the Workout Notes page)
    - Repeatedly press Down to skip all the workout notes, until you get to the first data page (the sensors notification, including GPS, should pop up)
    - Wait until sensors/GPS synced
    - Press Start

Or an even easier, more predictable way (doesn't depend on the # of workout notes pages):
    - Do Workout > Up > Up
(You are now on the last data page)
    - Wait for sync
    - Down
(You're back on the main workout page)
    - Start

(Yeah, all of these workarounds suck. It would be better if the sensors popup came up on the workout pages, not just the data pages.)
  • What about:

    - Start --> Up/Down to get to Run
    - Long hold on Up for menu
    - Training --> My Workouts
    - Select workout --> Do Workout
    - Down on "Start the timer to begin workout"

That leaves me on the first page of the workout and satellite & sensor acquisition starts in the background
  • Coming from the F3, the solution on 935 to start a workout is bad from a usability perspective. Also, checking what trainings are loaded on the watch requires to select an activity and long press the up button. This was lots easier on F3 where you had a main menu item for "My Trainings" where all trainings for all activity types were listed and from where you were able to start the workout and the corresponding activity.
No idea why they changed this.

I can see this seems like a step down. I, for one, like the new menu structure (also coming from F3), as it's more organised. I found it intuitive to select a workout, after going to my activity of choice first. Just my $0.02 ;)

Not having an FR935 but only a FR630 and a FR235 myself, I must say this is all very confusing to me as an observer.

On both of those devices, I can press the button from the watch face, and the device will begin to acquire GPS satellite signals and HR readings (from either an ANT+ HR sensor or the built-in optical HR sensor). I can then wait – however long it takes – until both have been ‘locked on’ before going to the Menu (with the ‘button’ on the FR630, or the button on the FR235) and then selecting a workout under My‑Workouts in the Training sub-menu for execution (‘Do Workout’). Is that not the case on the FR935?
  • Like aSmugDil I have to say this all looks terribly confusing for what surely cannot be that much different from other devices. On the 920 I do the same - select an activity i.e. Run, sensors begin acquiring and when locked I choose my workout, select Do Workout and start.
