Timing a portion of the run

Former Member

Hello

I just bougth a 935 and am new to running watches.
I would like to know if it is possible, during a standard run activity not an interval, to time a portion of the run ?

Let's say I am running then there is a portion of the run I know I want to get the exact time on that portion during the run, is that possible ? (other than to look at the current timing and do the maths when reaching the end of the portion).

Thanks for the help !

    One quick solution:

    • Disable autolap
    • start activity
    • Use Lap-Button to start the part of interest
    • run like hell during this lap ;)
    • Use Lap-Button again to stop
    • keep on running

You will see the lap-pace and lap-time for a short time in your display.

You could create a simple workout on the web interface and sync that watch?

    Something simple like

Step 1 run until lap button pressed
Step 2 run to a pace/distance goal for the portion
  • Personally I would log into garmin connect on your computer and go to the activity. Then when you are on the graphs right under the gps map change the setting from over time to over distance and then use the gps map to find where you want to start and note the time and then go to the end of your spot and do the simple math.
  • or simply create a Strava segment (private if necessary)

Thanks everyone for your constructive answers.
So as I understand there is in fact no simple way to do that and it has to be done in advance.

I think indeed the easiest solution is to rely on strava segments :)

Thanks again for the support !

Uh, did you not read post #2 above, which suggested you just use the Lap button?
  • You could use the stopwatch during an activity if you want. It would run independently of your activity (and it wouldn't record anything to your activity data). You would be able to switch back and forth between the stopwatch and the activity pages at will.

You would have to add it to the Controls menu (Hold Light) or create a hotkey.

    Settings > System > Controls menu/Hot keys.
  • There is a simple way. Just hit the lap button at the start and end of that section. If you have auto lap on, then it will automatically lap every mile. This means if the section you want to measure is more than a mile long or has a mile mark in the middle of the section you will get another lap trigger. That's why it was suggested to turn auto lap off first.
  • If you don't want to mess with laps (and that certainly is the easiest way) then set a hot key to be Stopwatch. Mid run invoke it when coming up to where you want to record. Back button takes you back to the data screens.
  • Lots of great suggestions, but the simplest one was the 2nd post. To clarify

Assuming your run activity is set at default to autolap every mile:

    A. If segment is shorter then a mile press lap button at the beginning of the segment, then press lap button at the end of the segment
    B. If segment is longer then a mile. Disable autolap at the beginning of the run or sometime before the segment (yes you can do this on the fly). Press lap button at the beginning of the segment and then press lap button at the end of the segment.

To get fancy you can adjust the 'Lap Alert' screen (found under Run Settings > Autolap > Lap Alert) so when you hit lap you can see information specific to the lap just completed (ie avg Lap HR, avg lap Pace, lap time, lap distance....etc) or totals (ie avg HR, total distance, total time...etc). This would give you instant information about the lap time and lap pace without having to look at data fields.
